Holt-Alkire
Suburban Neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio
Franklin County 43123
Planned divisions beside expansive older homes
Holt-Alkire holds various communities within itself, each with distinct architectural styles. There are New Traditional builds with Craftsman-style elements, modest ranches and Colonial-inspired two-stories. Newer planned communities like the Holt Park subdivision come with amenities maintained by a homeowners association. Regardless of whether homes are from the 1950s or built within the past decade, Holt-Alkire listings have a lower price point because of the city tax advantage. Most housing is in the $280,000 to $380,000 range, but larger listings can go for upwards of $430,000. These higher prices account for increased square footage and space between neighbors. Despite each community's differences, it's common to see kids biking on the streets and people strolling down the sidewalks, taking in the fresh air.
Playgrounds nearby for the little ones
Alkire Woods Park is the closest green space to the neighborhood under 2 miles away. It features a small playground, a paved walking path and a picnic pavilion. While lots of fun awaits the kiddos at the jungle gym, the playground is not shaded and can get quite hot in the summertime. Visitors rely on street parking. The next closest park is Big Run Park in the Riverbend neighborhood. Over 2 miles away, visitors can enjoy multi-acre woods with winding trails through the wetlands. Kids can play on a more expansive playground, and groups can raise their heart rates at the athletic complex. During the winter, the park is famous for its kid-friendly sledding hill.
High schoolers can get college credit or career skills
The neighborhood is zoned to South-Western City Schools, and students of every grade level are within walking or biking distance of their school. Bolton Crossing Elementary School earns a B-minus and goes through fourth grade. Students have access to a digital library, including books and other materials for research projects or study materials. Holt Crossing Intermediate School serves fifth and sixth graders, while Pleasant View Middle School serves grades seven and eight. Both schools have a C-plus Niche rating. Central Crossing High School has a B-minus grade and offers learners College Credit Plus, Ohio's dual enrollment program. Eligible students may apply to any Ohio public college or participating private college and attend multiple colleges to earn credit. High schoolers can also take an alternate route of study at the South-Western Career Academy right next door. Hamrick shares, "One of my neighbors teaches the auto mechanic course there. They have a cosmetology school, a restaurant where students can cook for you and you can get your hair cut for free by letting students practice on you."
An airport here, an airport there
While Holt-Alkire can feel like a world of its own, the neighborhood is just off Interstate 270. It’s an 8-1/2-mile drive to Downtown Columbus and an 11-mile drive to Ohio Stadium. Locals are car-dependent, and there is no public transportation within walking distance. Directly west is Bolton Field, a small corporate and recreational airport. The runway is about 2 miles away, and while the airport is an active flight school, mainly private planes fly in and out, meaning less noise disturbance overall to the neighborhood. When residents need to hit the skies, John Glenn Columbus International Airport is 14-1/2 miles away and Rickenbacker International Airport is 16 miles away.
Sugary smiles at Jolly Pirate Donuts
For quick essentials, Georgesville Square is 1-1/2 miles away, featuring a Kroger, Lowe's and chain restaurants. However, if residents want a nice meal or entertainment, they head straight to Grove City proper 3 miles southeast. Sleepy eyes awaken at the aroma of Transcend Coffee + Roastery's brews, and lunchtime bellies are satisfied by protein-packed plates from Plank's on Broadway. When a sweet tooth needs to be indulged, Jolly Pirate Donuts is open all day (almost) every day. Thomas Hamrick, Realtor with Keller Williams Consultants Realty and former Grove City local, says, "That's a fan favorite of Grove City people. People love their Jolly Pirate. If you like donuts, that's the place." Grove City also has plenty of artsy shops, like Sommer House Gallery. Inside are book signings by local authors and creations by up-and-coming artists. A few doors down is Little Theatre Off Broadway. "It's a really tiny theater, like less than 100 people," Hamrick says. "It's been there forever. Ever since I was a kid, so at least 20 years." The theater usually schedules two musicals, two comedies and two dramas every season.
