Craftsman homes from the past and present
Homes from the early 20th century sit alongside contemporary residences in Milo-Grogan. Early American foursquare and Arts & Crafts-styled homes define the community’s identity, and newly built homes in the area follow that lead with some new traditional touches. Rowhouses and small bungalows also fill out the narrow tree-lined streets. Developers have also turned to blighted and vacant homes nearby to provide affordable housing options. Prices range from the $180,000s for move-in ready homes up to about $500,000 for newly built premium homes.
Butterfly gardens, high-intensity training and play spaces
Residents can enjoy leisure time at the Milo-Grogan Community Center, a recreation center featuring a gymnasium, weight room, art facilities and a kitchen. Outside the center, residents can play basketball or enjoy the playground. Close to Shoemaker Avenue and St. Clair Avenue, New Beginnings Park offers an acre of greenspace with a playground, basketball courts and an open-air shelter. Locals can also find the Milo-Grogan Green Space and Community Garden on Cleveland Avenue, where milk thistle plants attract monarch butterflies during the late summer. CrossFit enthusiasts can keep themselves in peak form at the Rogue Gym, a facility at the fitness company’s headquarters in Milo-Grogan.Daily studies at Columbus city schools
Students in Milo-Grogan can attend schools in the Columbus City Schools system, which splits assignments along Interstate 71. Students on the west side attend Weinland Park Elementary School, which holds a C-minus on Niche, and Dominion Middle School, which earns a C grade. High schoolers on the west side can attend the C-plus-ranked Whetstone High. The D-plus ranked Windsor STEM Academy serves elementary students on the east side. Middle and high schoolers attend the D-plus ranked Linden-McKinley STEM Academy, where students can study in advanced placement courses and credentialed pathway classes designed to foster skills for future careers.A growing live music and arts scene
"A few years ago, nobody knew what Milo Arts was, even though it was doing really cool things," Barrett says. The organization leads the neighborhood’s emerging arts scene from the former Milo Elementary School building. Reflecting the area’s old-meets-new energy, the late 19th-century building now contains a live-work community of artists. Milo Arts hosts exhibits and outdoor installations at the nearby 934 Gallery, and live music and comedy nights happen at The Dallas at Milo. Locals can also attend MADurdays, a monthly gathering with music, studio openings and art showcases on every third Saturday of the month. 934 Gallery’s annual arts and music festival, 934 Fest, happens at the beginning of September. Local musicians, vendors from across Columbus and food trucks converge on the block surrounding the Milo Arts campus.Access to Greater Columbus with Interstates 71 and 670
The Interstate 71 highway runs directly through the center of Milo-Grogan, while Interstate 670 borders the south end of the neighborhood. Locals have quick access to greater Columbus with the highways, while the Arena District, Short North and the rest of the downtown area are about 2 miles away. The nearest hospital, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, is 2 miles northwest of Milo-Grogan. Domestic and international flights depart from John Glenn Columbus International Airport, 5 miles east of the neighborhood.Local beers and recognizable casual spots
Close to the rail tracks splitting Milo-Grogan from Italian Village, Ohio Brewing Company serves pub fare and craft beers on tap in a converted cardboard warehouse. Most of the neighborhood’s fast food options lie near 5th Avenue, with local options like Royal Fish Shrimp & Chicken and Wang’s Chinese Kitchen next to outposts for major brands such as Wendy’s, White Castle and Church’s Texas Chicken. Residents can also make pickup and delivery orders from a variety of kitchens in the Columbus Food Hall on Essex Road, with soul food, vegan fare, dessert and more available from more than 30 vendors. The nearest grocery store is the Kroger in the Weinland Park area, 1 mile northwest of the neighborhood. More dining and shopping options are available in the Short North and Italian Village areas, also to the west.Steps toward a brighter future
From the early to mid-20th century, the Milo-Grogan area was affected by redlining practices from banks and lenders. The construction of Interstate 71 in the 1960s, which removed more than 400 homes from the area, also had a major impact on the local culture. The neighborhood’s proximity to I-71 and I-670, multiple major rail lines and the airport may result in higher noise levels from nearby ground and air traffic. Today, efforts from both local organizations like Milo Arts and the city of Columbus have been key to stimulating the area’s progress, and mixed-use developments coming to the northeast end are poised to add more housing, retail and dining options. “Milo’s a wonderful place, and it’s worth protecting,” Barrett says.
