Nightlife and off-campus housing
At first glance, it’s easy to assume that Old North Columbus is entirely student housing. Centennial homes line the street, converted into apartments and townhouses. University flags, fraternity emblems and other typical college town odds and ends decorate stoops and business windows. However, there’s more to this neighborhood than Ohio State University. “The vast majority of the houses in Old North are student occupied,” says Joe Jackson, Realtor at Keller Williams Capital Partners. “But as you go south, there are pockets that are nearly all owner-occupied.” Historic homes and a vibrant social scene attract young professionals and investors to this neighborhood.

Hounddog’s lives by their motto — “Pizza for the people.” Customers choose from a selection of specialty pizzas, including bacon cheeseburger and breakfast pizza, and select the spice level of their sauce, ranked from pesto to howlin’ hot. Delivery is available until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, so be on the lookout for the Hounddog Delivery Machine: a 1962 Cadillac Fleetwood topped with a plastic Basset Hound strapped to a rocket. Jack and Benny’s Old North Diner has served breakfast and brunch since 1997. Hungry patrons come for their infamous Gut Buster breakfast or to admire the spot’s OSU sports memorabilia with their coffee.
High Street and Indianola Avenue's main stretches are filled with several locally-owned restaurants, shops and more. Music venues, in particular, are popular in the area, including Ace of Cups and the Spacebar. “One of my favorite concert venues is called Rumba Café,” says John Kohlhepp, Realtor at Keller Williams Capital Partners. “The music they play is pretty diverse, from smaller folk bands to rock bands and more experimental stuff.” More generalized shopping is found at the neighborhood’s Target, CVS and Giant Eagle.
For a late-night slice, residents head over to Hounddog’s, known for its massive, foldable pies.

Renovated historic homes
Houses built at the turn of the 20th century give the neighborhood a historic atmosphere. Jackson says there's even a log cabin from the 1800s on East Norwich, believed to be the oldest dwelling in Franklin County. Despite their older look, most homes have had some level of restoration. “More than 70% of the houses have been renovated in the past ten years,” says Luyang Yin of Red 1 Realty. “So don’t be afraid of the age.”
Tudor, Craftsman and American Foursquare homes are typical styles in the neighborhood, often with brick or vinyl siding. Narrow sidewalks pass covered front porches close enough to chat with neighbors. Prices begin in the mid-$100,000s for homes needing repairs, increasing to the mid-$300,000s for those with fully updated interiors.
With such a considerable student presence, it comes as no surprise that multi-family homes are frequently available for investors. Craftsman duplexes are the most common, and range from the low $300,000s to the high $400,000s, based on size, condition and convenience to busy streets like Summit and High.
Old North Columbus has homes with two-story listings with Craftsman and Cape Cod influences.

I grew up in Westerville. I had a great young life. I had a lot of friends. The schools were new and fresh smelling. I was a popular person. That was a feat in itself.
