Suburban Neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio
Franklin County 43219
While the big birds land just east at John Glenn Columbus International Airport, you could land your next home in the nest of Oriole Heights, located northeast of downtown Columbus. There’s plenty of mid to late-century charm close to a university.
The homes date back to the 1960s, and some have gone through or are going through a renovation process. “The neighborhood is up and coming,” says Matthew Seward, a Realtor with Keller Williams Capital Partners. “Habitat for Humanity has come in and renovated existing homes, torn some down, and started from scratch.” The City of Columbus has targeted the area for revitalization. The price range of homes in Oriole Heights is from $180,000 to $270,000. The standard houses are two-story, ranch-style and split-level homes with three bedrooms and one-and-a-half bathrooms. The homes usually have a detached two-car garage and at least a partial basement. “Oriole Heights attracts first-time homebuyers and people who want to be close to those attending Ohio Dominican University,” he says. Oriole Heights is on the doorstep of the over-100-year-old Roman-Catholic school founded in 1911 as an all-women’s college and became co-ed in the 1960s. The school currently has 1700 students and competes in Division II athletics. The football field is on campus, not far from the homes in Oriole Heights.
The Brentnell Community Center was built to provide activities for the surrounding community. The facility on Brentnell Avenue has a fitness room, a place to do arts and crafts, and even shoot a little pool. From April through December, Brentnell Community Center is a periodic stop of a mobile fresh produce market that rotates among Columbus area community centers. The produce is available for eligible families. Alongside the community center is a playground, and behind the facility are tennis courts and a basketball court. Beyond that, a large amount of green space can be used for soccer and football games.
At the corner of Holt Avenue and Sunbury Road, you’ll find Good Kitchen 614. There, you’ll find soul food served with a heart. When the pandemic started in 2020, the restaurant gave away their food for an hour every Tuesday and Wednesday. Staff also personally delivered free meals to homebound seniors who called ahead. Today, on holidays and other special occasions, they give away meals and, sometimes, even one of their sauces during a designated time.
Oriole Heights is in the Columbus City School District. The South Mifflin STEM Academy serves pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade students, and Niche says that the school has a 14-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio and a B-minus grade for the quality of the teaching staff. From seventh grade on, students attend the Linden-McKinley STEM Academy. The school has advanced placement courses in English literature, calculus, government and US history. Niche says the school has a 20-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio and has over 800 students.
Location is one of the main draws to living in Oriole Heights. It’s less than a 10-minute drive to get to downtown Columbus. You can also get to John Glenn Columbus International Airport via Interstate 670. It’s only about five miles away.
