A historic West Side neighborhood
Transforming from a pastoral community in the 1800s to the site of a Union-operated facility during the Civil War and finally to one of the first suburbs on Columbus’ west side, Southwest Hilltop’s homes are part of the area’s history. Many residences built in the early to mid-20th century remain and are ripe for renovation. “It’s got a lot of charm and character in an area that’s well kept, overall,” says Realtor Greg Watson, who sells homes with Red One Realty. A public elementary and a private high school are located in the neighborhood, and the Hilltop YMCA does youth outreach.
Bungalows and ranch styles
As the name would suggest, the homes are located southwest of the main Hilltop neighborhood. “South of Sullivant between Hague and Demorest is one of the more desirable places to be in the Hilltop area,” Watson says. The homes were built between the 1920s and 60s and are valued from $150,000 to $350,000. The tree-shaded backyards are large enough for gardens and patios. The suburban streets are lined with brick and wood-exterior bungalows, ranch styles and two-story New Traditionals. “It’s a strong community,” says Realtor Byron Diaz, who sells homes in the neighborhood with NextHome Experience. “People like to take evening strolls and talk to their neighbors.”

Joseppi’s Pizza and Koki’s Tortillas
Multiple restaurants line Sullivant Avenue, on the neighborhood’s northern border, but Joseppi’s Pizza is the most well-known option. Robert Thompson opened the award-winning restaurant in 1969, and his son, Chuck, took it over in 1998. Chuck still follows his father’s sauce and dough recipe. Although the business now has many locations throughout Columbus, the Southwest Hilltop Joseppi’s was the first. In fact, Robert Thompson used to sleep on a cot in the backroom of the simple cinderblock building. Just down the street, people walk up to the window at Hilltop Dairy Twist to grab an ice cream or a hot dog. There are also chain options like Subway and Wendy’s. Also located along Sullivant Avenue, La Bodega Supermarket specializes in ingredients for Latin American food. Next door, Koki’s Tortillas sells fresh tortillas that have been prepared in-house. A Kroger is 2 miles east of the neighborhood.
