Southwest Hilltop
Suburban Neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio
Franklin County 43204
Bungalows and ranch styles
As the name would suggest, the homes are located southwest of the main Hilltop neighborhood. “South of Sullivant between Hague and Demorest is one of the more desirable places to be in the Hilltop area,” Watson says. The homes were built between the 1920s and 60s and are valued from $150,000 to $350,000. The tree-shaded backyards are large enough for gardens and patios. The suburban streets are lined with brick and wood-exterior bungalows, ranch styles and two-story New Traditionals. “It’s a strong community,” says Realtor Byron Diaz, who sells homes in the neighborhood with NextHome Experience. “People like to take evening strolls and talk to their neighbors.”Public schools within walking distance
Binns Elementary is on the neighborhood’s southeast corner, within walking distance of most homes, and Wedgewood Middle School is a mile west of the Southwest Hilltop. Both schools have C-minus ratings from Niche. On the neighborhood’s southwest corner, Franklin Heights High School has a B-minus rating. The high school’s professional college advisors offer help with SAT preparation, resume writing and scholarship applications. The private Catholic Bishop Ready High School has a science wing, a band room and a weight room. It has a B-plus rating and is located in the center of the neighborhood.Joseppi’s Pizza and Koki’s Tortillas
Multiple restaurants line Sullivant Avenue, on the neighborhood’s northern border, but Joseppi’s Pizza is the most well-known option. Robert Thompson opened the award-winning restaurant in 1969, and his son, Chuck, took it over in 1998. Chuck still follows his father’s sauce and dough recipe. Although the business now has many locations throughout Columbus, the Southwest Hilltop Joseppi’s was the first. In fact, Robert Thompson used to sleep on a cot in the backroom of the simple cinderblock building. Just down the street, people walk up to the window at Hilltop Dairy Twist to grab an ice cream or a hot dog. There are also chain options like Subway and Wendy’s. Also located along Sullivant Avenue, La Bodega Supermarket specializes in ingredients for Latin American food. Next door, Koki’s Tortillas sells fresh tortillas that have been prepared in-house. A Kroger is 2 miles east of the neighborhood.Hollywood Casino and Ohio State football
There are multiple entertainment and recreational options near the neighborhood. The Hollywood Casino is less than 3 miles northwest. The gilded building has over 2,200 slots, 70 table games, the largest poker room in Ohio, multiple restaurants and live entertainment. Ohio Stadium is 10 miles northeast of Southwest Hilltop. One hundred thousand screaming fans regularly fill the stadium to watch The Ohio State Buckeyes football team face off against its Big Ten Conference rivals. For a quieter afternoon, the Columbus Metropolitan Library hosts family story times one block north of the neighborhood. The library has over 50,000 volumes.Getting around Columbus
The neighborhood offers direct commuter access to the rest of the city. There are public bus stops on the north end of the neighborhood along Sullivant Avenue, on the east end along South Hague Avenue and on the south end along Briggs Road. Commuters take Sullivant Avenue and Interstate 70 about 6 miles northeast to Downtown Columbus. John Glenn Columbus International Airport is 12 miles northeast of Southwest Hilltop via Interstate 670.Westgate Sports Park and Big Run Athletic Complex
Westgate Park is two blocks north of the neighborhood. The park has multi-purpose sports fields, baseball diamonds, basketball courts, pickleball overlays, tennis courts and an open-air shelter. Located inside the park, the Westgate Community Center has an art room for children's classes and an auditorium for amateur theatrical performances. The Summer Jam West community arts festival is held annually at the park and features local bands and crafts vendors. About 2 miles southwest of the neighborhood, the 273-acre Big Run Park has an indoor basketball complex and a paved walking and biking path that passes through colorful pollinator fields. Two miles north of the neighborhood, the Hilltop YMCA hosts youth sports and summer day camps, providing financial assistance to the needy.Crime
The neighborhood has a 4/10 CAP Index crime rating, which falls in line with the national average.
