Trabue Woods
Homeowner’s association keeps things ship-shape
Trabue Woods is a deed-restrictive community of less than 400 single-family homes that surround the fairly large Maranatha Baptist Church. It’s a small neighborhood, which Sarah Gaffney, executive assistant to RealtyOhio Real Estate’s vice president, says is a draw. “It makes it easy to build community, and that makes a place feel more secure and more welcoming. It’s nice to get to know your neighbors.” The neighborhood is overseen by the Trabue Woods Subdivision Homeowner's Association, to which homeowners pay a small annual fee. The association orchestrates semi-annual meetings to address concerns and hosts various events throughout the year. “Predominantly, the home styles are two-story traditional, ranch-style and split-level. They have nice features, with at least two bathrooms and two-car garages,” Realtor Aimee Calvert of RE/MAX Premier Choice says. Homes can cost anywhere between $300,000 and $400,000.Every retail need met at Hilliard-Rome
The Hilliard-Rome Road exit off Interstate 70 offers a wide variety of restaurant and retail choices. Brand-name shopping is abundant; shoppers can get all sorts of goodies at stores like Hobby Lobby, Kohl's, Dick's Sporting Goods and Target. And all though it's been some time since Gaffney has lived in Hilliard, she says, "I actually still go all the way over there all the time because they have a store called Cato. I like to buy my clothes from there." Stocking up the pantry is just as easy. The corridor has many grocery stores, from Meijer and Aldi to Sam's Club. For a night out, locals can enjoy a flick at AMC Columbus 10 or have a meal together at well-known spots like Olive Garden or Outback Steakhouse. However, some smaller spots also get local love. Créme de la Créme Bakery & Café is a Ukrainian-owned, French-style bakery that serves buttery pastries, decadent desserts and lavender lattes. Friends gather at Average Joe's to split a pie and some beers while watching the latest game. And just south of I-70 is Handel's Homemade Ice Cream, a family-run operation scooping out sugary sweets since 1945. The company started in Youngstown, Ohio, and has branched out to over 100 locations in 11 states.Students zoned for two school districts
Students here attend schools in either the Hilliard City or South-Western City school districts. Hilliard gets an overall grade of A-minus on Niche. Gaffney shares, "I attended Hilliard schools from elementary through high school. In fact, my parents moved us there because they are great at helping kids catch up." Learning begins at Hilliard Horizon Elementary School, followed by Hilliard Heritage Middle School. Both schools have a score of B. Hilliard Darby High earns an A-minus and is No. 16 on Niche's list of best public high schools in Franklin County. The South-Western City School District receives an overall grade of B-minus from Niche. This past year, Prairie Lincoln Elementary School held various interactive events for its students, while Norton Middle School had a summer camp for students to build relationships with their new teachers before the school year. Both schools earn a C rating. Older students move on to Westland High School, which receives a C-plus grade.
Walking Trabue Woods Park’s trails
When kids just need to let loose, they can run around the playground at Trabue Woods Park, which includes climbing equipment, slides and a swing set. The park also has a trail that winds through nearly 6 acres of woods. The trail is especially popular among pet owners and bicyclists. The neighborhood is also within 4 miles of many other parks, including the city’s newest metro park, Quarry Trails, colloquially known as The Quarry. For those looking to hit the green, golfers are within 2 miles of the public Raymond Memorial Golf Course, which also features a pro shop and clubhouse.Catching the I’s to get across town
Conveniently located on the west edge of Columbus, the whole city is accessible to residents via I-70 and I-270. Gaffney says, “If you need to go clear across town, you can get there in about half an hour with 270.” The neighborhood is about 9 miles from Downtown Columbus and 5-1/2 miles from Ohio State University. Limited public transit stops are available along Trabue Road, but most locals drive. For out-of-state travel, John Glenn Columbus International Airport is 14 miles east.
