Westchester-Green Countrie features homes built in the 1970s and 1980s
As you head west on Broad Street from Interstate 270, just north of the Columbus area community of Galloway, you’ll find the combined neighborhood of Westchester-Green Countrie. However, the part of this neighborhood closest to Broad Street has been around the longest. “Green Countrie is the older neighborhood with homes dating back to 1974,” says Sandra Thomas, Realtor with RE/MAX Revealty. “The homes are primarily from the 1970s and 1980s. On the school bus, we would go by Green Countrie every day as it was being constructed, and that was the housing development of its time.”
Homes range from condos to traditional single-family styles
The price range of the homes in Green Countrie is from $250,000 to $320,000. The architectural style varies a little more here with ranch-style, two-story traditional and split-level. The houses here and in Westchester typically range from 1000 to 2000 square feet. The homes in Westchester were built between 1991-2000, where two-story traditional and ranch-style are the main architectural designs. “The Westchester homes have more ‘open concept’ floor plans, meaning rooms like the kitchen are more open, which provide more room for socializing and cooking,” Thomas says. “In Green Countrie, you won’t have that space unless you remove a wall.” Basements are also common in homes in Westchester-Green Countrie. “I tell people, if you can do it, put a basement in. That’s what people want. We’re in Ohio tornado alley,” Thomas says. “If you can’t put in a full one, at least build a partial one.”
Hardesty Heights is a condo community within Westchester-Green Countrie. It’s common to have condos selling for under $200,000. They are equipped with mainly two-bedroom and two-bathroom floor plans. Some condos have three bedrooms. They vary in size from under 1000 to 1600 square feet. “The units were built in the 1960s and early 1970s, and people love it there. It’s like its own little community,” Thomas says.
Students attend schools in the South-Western district
Students who live in Westchester-Green Countrie can attend schools in the South-Western City School District, including Prairie Norton Elementary School. With over 600 students that attend the school, the staff focuses on high expectations for students by personalizing and individualizing instruction. Niche says that Norton Middle School has an 18-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. Westland High School gets a B-minus grade on Niche for the quality of college preparation the school provides.
Recreation options range from playgrounds to prairies
The Scioto Big Run stream flows by Green Countrie Park. Totaling 17 acres, the park features a non-lighted baseball diamond, an open-air shelter for picnics and a small playground for the kids. There’s plenty of opportunity to exercise with a paved walking trail encompassing the park. For outdoor adventures on a larger scale that’s a little further away, there’s the Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park, which is over 7000 acres of forest, prairie and wetlands. Don’t be surprised to see some wildlife roaming in the pastures just a 10-minute drive to the west.
Grab essentials at ALDI and pizza at Galloway Crossing
When it’s time to refuel your stomach, Flyer’s Pizza in the Galloway Crossing Shopping Center is a popular local chain that features pizza, subs and salads. If you’re hungry knows no bounds, try The Bomber specialty pizza with provolone cheese, pepperoni, Italian sausage, ham & salami, onion, mushroom and green pepper. To stock up on your food supply at home, hit the ALDI on West Broad for the essentials. Remember to bring your bags and put a quarter down for a deposit on a shopping cart.
Residents have convenient routes to I-70 and I-270
No matter where you are in Westchester-Green Countrie, access to highways is easy. “You either take Hilliard Rome Road north to Interstate 70 or Broad Street to get on 270 in not very much time,” Thomas says. “You can also use Georgesville to get to 270. Access to highways is very nice in this area.”
