A neighborhood between chapters
Woodland Holt, a Columbus neighborhood about 3 miles northwest of downtown, has experienced several chapters. Though its homes are mostly renter-occupied, Realtor Kate Kimbrough of RE/MAX ONE says it wasn’t always that way. “The sad thing is that, maybe 20 to 30 years ago, these homes were all owner-occupied,” says Kimbrough, who had family in Woodland Holt for many years. “Today, people are just buying them for investment properties to rent, and most of the renters are applying for Section 8. That’s just not a good scenario for the neighbors.” However, she hopes homebuyers see that Woodland Holt’s houses — many of which are “in really good shape” — have the potential to become longtime, even generational homes. Its proximity to public schools, community centers and the airport add to the neighborhood’s appeal.
From two-bedroom Cape Cods to four-bedroom ramblers
Woodland Holt is almost entirely residential, home to just over 1,400 people. Winding, widely spaced, lightly wooded streets fill this narrow strip of northeastern Columbus, featuring primarily Cape Cod and ranch-style homes. These were built mainly during the mid-1900s and average about 1,050 square feet, roughly half the national norm. Fittingly, Woodland Holt properties typically cost less than half the Columbus average. Two-bedroom houses that could use some TLC start below $100,000. For $160,000, homebuyers can find a fully renovated two-bedroom or a four-bedroom needing updates. Fully renovated three- or four-bedroom homes top out around $230,000. “For first-time homebuyers starting out, the home prices are decent,” Kimbrough says.
Hourly buses and I-670 proximity
Several bus stops appear along Woodland Holt’s perimeter, with hourly service from the Central Ohio Transit Authority. The neighborhood is about 1 mile north of Interstate 670, the most direct route into downtown Columbus. Locals are also a quick drive from John Glenn Columbus International Airport, which operates about 2 miles east.
Two STEM schools within 2 miles
The Columbus City School District has two public schools within 2 miles of Woodland Holt. South Mifflin STEM Academy accommodates prekindergarten through sixth grade a few blocks east. It’s home to about 240 students and has a C-minus rating from Niche. Seventh through 12th graders head in the opposite direction to Linden-McKinley STEM Academy, which is rated a D-plus. Its nearly 830 students can enroll in college prep courses and earn career certifications to prepare them for post-grad life.
Across the street from a supermarket
Locals can run errands at the Save A Lot supermarket immediately north of the neighborhood. Few locally owned businesses operate near the neighborhood, though Fresh Bite Express is an exception. Hidden within the Woodland Express convenience store, this restaurant serves specialties like chicken, hamburgers, gyros and fried fish.
Indoor-outdoor recreation spaces nearby
Some residents in Woodland Holt’s northern section can walk east on Mock Road to Mock Park. This public green space fills 24 acres with open playfields, a playground, two basketball half-courts and a tennis court striped for pickleball. It’s also home to the Willis Athletic Complex, a large, polished gymnasium hosting basketball and indoor soccer games. A few blocks south of the neighborhood is Brentnell Park and Recreation Center. It features similar outdoor amenities to Mock Park, while its indoor offerings include art and billiards rooms.
Home to houses of worship
Two houses of worship call Woodland Holt home. To the north, Living Faith Apostolic Church has served the community since 1975. It welcomes neighbors to participate in men’s, women’s and youth ministries, among other engagement opportunities. Greater Saint Paul Church to the south hosts regular outreach events and delivers food and other items to neighbors in need. Several other congregations meet within a few blocks of the neighborhood.
Need-to-know stats
