Buchanan Field
Suburban Neighborhood in Concord, California
Contra Costa County 94520
Appealing midcentury homes and manufactured homes offer affordability
Highlighted by midcentury homes that often feature custom landscaping and stand out for their curb appeal, the Concord neighborhood’s traditional housing ranges from the mid-$500,000s to the mid-$700,000s. The all-ages Victoria Mobile Village and the 55-plus Dalis Gardens community offer manufactured homes typically priced between the low $100,000s to the high $200,000s. "Concord is in the non-tech part of the Bay Area," says Realtor Rich Fleming of the Rich Fleming Group. "If you don't have a bazillion dollars in stock options, this is a good place for you. It's great for young families and retirees, as well as professionals in their 20s and 30s on moderate budgets."All-access Matteo's Dream is the largest playground in the city
Hillcrest Community Park is a large neighborhood green space that features Matteo’s Dream, an all-access playscape designed to allow disabled children, including those who are blind and deaf, to safely play alongside others. Opened in 2007, Matteo’s Dream is the largest playground in the city. Traditional amenities include athletic fields for baseball, softball, soccer and model airplane flying, and the park is home to a paved pathway that connects to the popular Iron Horse Regional Trail. Neighborhood golfers can get into the swing of things at the public Buchanan Fields Golf Course adjacent to the airport. A popular gathering spot for the community, it is anchored by a 9-hole layout that is the site of weekly tournament play.Mt. Diablo School District is highly rated by Niche
Hidden Valley Elementary, rated B by Niche, Valley View Middle, rated B-plus, and Mt. Diablo High, rated B-minus, are among several public school options. The high school offers several career technology courses as well as a JROTC program. The Mt. Diablo Unified School District is rated B-plus by Niche, with “A”s for diversity and college prep.Neighborhood amusement park, buzzy downtown highlight entertainment destinations
The neighborhood is home to several family friendly entertainment options, including Hurricane Harbor, a popular seasonal waterpark, and Round 1 Bowling & Amusement. Local movie fans can enjoy both a cineplex with IMAX and the West Wind Solano Drive-In, where moviegoers 11 and under get in for $2. More fun is in store in in Downtown Concord, located less than 2 miles away. At Todos Santos Plaza, lush green lawns are crisscrossed by well-paved paths, shaded by towering pines and studded with a bronze statue of city founder Don Salvio Pacheco. The Music & Market Concert Series, a seasonal Thursday night event, is a local favorite. “My husband and I love coming here in the summer for the farmers market and live music,” says East Bay resident Katie Hammel. “The market itself isn’t very big, but it has a great mix of things like Chinese dumplings, fresh berries and these amazing-smelling soaps; we always hit up the pet food truck, too.” Hammel especially loves the event’s opportunity for people-watching. “It feels like everyone gathers here to laugh and catch up. Kids play on the playground and chase each other around, and you’ll see people dancing or just humming along to the music. I love just relaxing here, feeling connected to the whole scene.”Easy to get in and out as well as around the Bay Area
State Route 4, also known as California Delta Highway, runs along the north side of the community and intersects with Interstate 680 just west of the neighborhood. Delta Highway connects directly to Interstate 80 about 15 miles west. I-80 is the main roadway connecting the northern East Bay to the major cities of the southern East Bay as well as San Francisco and the South Bay. I-680 provides quick and easy access to nearby points of interest such as Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek. Thus, Buchanan Field offers access without the hassle. “In this crazy Bay Area traffic, access is worth its weight in gold,” says Gwendolyn Woods, a Realtor with Bridgeway Realty. Public transportation is similarly convenient. Bus stops dot neighborhood streets, and commuter rail service is available less than 2 miles away at the Concord BART Station and about 4 miles away at the North Concord/Martinez station. Buchanan Field Airport is used primarily for charter jet service.Neighborhood offers myriad shopping and dining options
Large shopping centers in and adjacent to the neighborhood offer a mix of familiar stores and full-service grocers. Sam’s Club, Target, Home Depot and Whole Foods are just a sampling of the myriad commercial options. Dining options are found throughout the neighborhood, with the largest concentration at The Veranda shopping center. Visitors can choose from a number of burger options, both classic and vegan, or enjoy more upscale fare at restaurants such as Doppio Zero, highly rated for its southern Italian favorites, and Puesto, an artsy Mexican eatery. The city also features the Concord Taco Trail, a collection of 40 independently owned taquerias within city limits.Crime rating
The Criminal Apprehension Program index gives the neighborhood a 4-out-of-10, considered a moderate rating.
