Concord neighborhood quieter, less crowded than Bay Area’s big cities
Shamrock Corners in the East Bay city of Concord is within reach of major regional hubs like Oakland and San Francisco, but the lots are larger, the homes are cheaper, and there is less traffic on residential streets. Laid out on sunny lands beneath Mount Diablo, Concord’s neighborhoods were built where grape vines, tomatoes, and fruit- and nut-bearing trees once grew in abundance. Now an urban area, apartment buildings fill many blocks of Shamrock Corners, with some condominium complexes and modest homes mixed in. “Many people move to this area from San Francisco,” says Jill Cherne, realtor with Keller Williams Realty, who grew up in the area and has been selling real estate there for over 18 years. “Often, it's people who want to start a family or just want more space or a lower cost of living. This area offers a different lifestyle than the city.”

Diverse housing options include post-war homes
Concord saw a post-World War II population boom. Much of the housing was built in the 1950s, with some condominium complexes going up in the 1970s. “Because it’s a larger, more spread-out area compared to its neighbor Pleasant Hill, there's a lot more diversity with the types of housing here, like multi-unit housing and condos,” Cherne says. The streets are wide and lined with sidewalks. Single-family homes are clustered near Cambridge Park and are typically ranch-style with two-car garages and modest, grassy lawns. A few have second stories. Single-family homes run from $650,000 for homes under 1500 square feet to $850,000 for homes up to 2,300 square feet. Condominiums tend to be one-bedroom units priced from $240,000 to $250,000.

Public transportation and interstate provide access within Concord and larger region
Shamrock Corners is on the southwest corner of Concord, right off Interstate 680, a regional corridor, so major employers in Bay Area cities are within reach. The Mount Diablo Unified School District and John Muir Medical Center are the biggest employers in Concord, and the hospital is under 3 miles from Shamrock Corners. Buses stop on Meadow Lane and Monument Boulevard, providing access to downtown and throughout Concord. Oakland is 20 miles away, and the Oakland Airport is another 10 miles beyond. San Francisco is 30 miles away. “Shamrock Corners is an easier commute than neighborhoods that are further within Concord because Monument Boulevard can get backed up the further in you go,” says Tina Kaur-Campbell, a Realtor with Keller Williams who has sold homes in the area for a decade.
