Vista Diablo/Wilshire Estates
Ranch homes at a reasonable price
The neighborhood is mainly made up of ranch homes with three or four bedrooms. These were largely built in the 1960s and 70s and have been lovingly cared for. “These are really solid homes that were built with pride and craftsmanship. It was an era when builders were still using old-growth redwoods and oaks,” Chimienti says. Lot sizes are typically around 6,000 to 7,000 square feet, so there’s plenty of room for landscaping, gardening or hosting a backyard cookout. There are sidewalks on most streets, some under the shade of palm trees. Home prices range from around $800,000 to $1 million, making it far more affordable than the median in San Francisco and the San Francisco Peninsula.Trails, open space and emerald-green hillsides
Parks and trails are a major perk for the community. The Contra Costa Trail hugs the neighborhood’s northeastern edge. It traverses almost 14 miles in a horseshoe pattern through Central Contra Costa County. The path is 8 feet wide, so there’s plenty of room for people traveling in either direction. Skateboarders can brush up on street skating at the Concord Skatepark, just a mile away. Lime Ridge Open Space is with walking distance of the neighborhood. With 1,200 acres of green hillsides and trails, it’s a go-to for hiking, biking and birdwatching. In the summer months, its emerald-green slopes are flecked with wildflower blooms, while winter sees the grass turn to a brilliant shade of golden yellow.Attend Mount Diablo schools
Students in Vista Diablo/Wilshire Estates are served by schools in the Mount Diablo Unified School District. The high school also has an International Baccalaureate program that helps prepare students for college and beyond.Grocery shopping close to home
Trader Joe’s has a location at the corner of Treat Boulevard and Oak Grove Road just outside the neighborhood. Ozora Sushi Restaurant is in the same shopping center as Trader Joe’s and features 60 kinds of rolls. Mona’s Burgers & Shakes is next door and uses 100% grass-fed beef with no hormones or antibiotics in their hand-crafted hamburgers. It’s less than a ten-minute drive to the nearest Safeway, complete with a Starbucks and a photo center, and a Whole Foods Market.Getting around the East Bay
Vista Diablo/Wilshire Estates is about 2 miles from the nearest Interstate 680 on-ramp. “Most people here are commuters, and most go by interstate rather than the train. For those who want to take BART, there is a station not too far away,” says Mike Kavanaugh, a Broker and Owner with Town & Country Realty Associates with over 15 years of experience. With no traffic issues, it takes 35 minutes to get to San Francisco. With traffic tie-ups, it can take a little over an hour. County Connection bus line stops can be found on Treat Boulevard and Oak Grove Road, with some lines taking you to the Concord BART or Bay Area Rapid Transit rail stop. The nearest hospital is John Muir Health’s Walnut Creek Medical Center, about 3 miles away.Concord at risk for wildfires
Like much of the East Bay, Concord is at risk for wildfires. Destructive wildfires have become a part of life in this region of California and residents may be required to evacuate if a fire approaches. Fire insurance should be a consideration for prospective homebuyers.
