Four
Winding streets lead to homes on hilltops
Four is a large neighborhood, with smaller subdivisions, built over decades, spaced throughout. There’s no unifying house style, but several styles, varied based on each development’s age. In the western side of the neighborhood, winding streets lead to mid-1900s ranch-styles with wide, flat roofs. A few blocks east are hilly lots peppered with tulip poplar trees, where two-story houses were built in the 1990s. At the neighborhood’s eastern corner, in a small, dense development near the Golden Eagle Golf Club, are modern homes from the 2000s and 2010s. Most houses in Four range in price from $250,000 to $800,000.Preschool through high school education are close to home
Parents can enroll young children in Kids Putnam Day Care Center, a non-profit childcare service dual-licensed through the Department of Human Services and the Department of Disability and Aging. Kids Putnam opened in 1994 and offers center-based programs for children from ages 1 to 5, plus in-home programs from birth to age 5 for children who qualify for Tennessee Early Intervention Services. Putnam County Public Schools operates Northeast Elementary School, graded B by Niche; Avery Trace Middle School and Cookeville High School, both graded B plus. Tennessee Tech University, on the north side of town, enrolls about 10,000 students annually.Trails and parks encourage outdoor recreation
Cinderella Park is one of Cookeville's oldest and longest-operating public parks. Playgrounds, picnic shelters, restrooms and basketball courts ensure there’s plenty to do, and the 4.2 mile Tennessee Central Heritage Rail Trail passes alongside the park, tracing a former railroad route. Aside from providing a beginner-friendly walking path, the Rail Trail connects downtown Cookeville to the town of Algood by starting at the Cookeville Depot Museum and ending at the Algood Baseball Fields. Other recreation options include golf at Belle Acres or Tennessee Tech's Golden Eagle Golf Courses. Golden Eagle is a public club with a clubhouse, restaurant, pro shop and pool, in addition to its 6,600-yard, par 70 course. Belle Acres opened in 1930 and is the oldest active course in the area, offering a practice range, nine holes and Bar On The Green, a restaurant that overlooks the course and serves wings, sandwiches and pizzas alongside a full bar menu.Popular restaurants are easy to find
One of the neighborhood's popular restaurants, Irrationale Kitchen & Taps, is also off the Tennessee Central Heritage Rail Trail. With a regularly changing beer list and a menu full of Southern comfort food, including fried green tomatoes and house-made pimiento cheese, it's a great stop along the trail or as its own destination. Another popular spot is Big Tony’s Pizzeria, a family-run restaurant in the Village Center, a shopping plaza on 10th Street. Owned and operated by a family who moved from New York, Big Tony’s is known for its authentic New York-style pizza, stromboli and calzones, as well as classic Italian desserts. On the northeastern end of the neighborhood is Old Kentucky Commons, a new outdoor mall with the nearest grocery store, Food City, alongside Dunkin' and Starbucks. The mall is open for expansion, with several commercial parcels available, and is likely to remain under construction for the next few years as new businesses open. The IGA grocery store just outside the neighborhood is a closer alternative to those on the eastern side of the neighborhood.Downtown is under 3 miles away
Because Four is a large neighborhood, travel times vary depending on a resident’s address. Four is 3 miles from downtown at its farthest point and under a mile at its nearest. Driving between Four and downtown takes between 5 and 15 minutes, depending on location. Cookeville is around 81 miles east of Nashville, and driving between the two takes around an hour and a half. Knoxville is about 100 miles in the opposite direction. Nashville's airport is the nearest with commercial service, and an inter-city bus route connects the town.
