Cornwall has highly rated schools and employment opportunities
Within the Hudson Valley, Cornwall Township, 61 miles from New York City, is a mountainous area known for its highly rated schools, revival architecture, proximity to military bases and nature. “It’s also right by the Hudson on the west side,” says Diana Polack, a Realtor with Compass Greater NY, LLC. Polack has been working in the industry for over 35 years. “It’s a very hot market, and I've seen that my clients, in just one or two visits, absolutely fall in love. They’re really happy living there.” Within the area’s rolling hills are villages and hamlets with gridded residential streets and restaurants. Cornwall-On-Hudson is Cornwall Township’s urban center and borders the Hudson River. “The market is hot because of all the employment around West Point and the United States Military Base and all of the great jobs right there,” says Polack. Cornwall is 20 minutes from the National Guard and United States Military bases in Stewart and West Point. The area’s school district is also listed as the top district in Orange County on Niche.

Split-level, Colonial Revival and Dutch Colonial Revival are the most prevalent housing styles in the area, though there are many custom builds and Tudor Revivals in Cornwall-On-Hudson. “It’s pretty built up, and people love being able to acquire 1890s homes; there are these beautiful vintage homes that people can sometimes be lucky enough to obtain,” says Polack. “So that’s the draw, a charming home with original details.” Homes range from $250,000 to $775,000. Larger homes near the Hudson or in the more rural areas of Cornwall Township are in the New Traditional style and range from $800,000 to $1 million. The CAP Index Crime Score is a 2 out of 10. The national average is 4.

Hiking and biking in local parks
Riverlight Park is just outside the Cornwall Public Library. It has Little League baseball fields, hard-top basketball and tennis courts for pick-up games, a playground, and open green spaces for picnics. The park used to have a town pool, but it was closed in the fall of 2024 due to leakage issues. The wading pool is still open for the summer months. The Storm King Art Center is a 500-acre sculpture park with walking and biking paths. “People come from all over and the locals really enjoy it,” says Polack. “You can also rent a bike and explore the sculptures. That way, you can have a picnic there and you will have some really outstanding artwork. It's just an incredible place, and it's right there, just a few minutes outside of town.” Storm King State Park is a nearly 2,000-acre park that includes Storm King Mountain outside Cornwall-on-Hudson. The park is a popular hiking area with views of the Hudson Valley. Another hiking location is the Black Rock Forest, a conservation and research forest with 26 miles of trails.
