Crows Nest is an incorporated town made up of an enclave of private estates along the winding Sunset Lane. The estates feature between two and twenty acres, and properties on the eastern side of Sunset Lane border the White River. Crows Nest has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2000, and its history stretches back to the early 19th century when Marion County Commissioners established Crows Nest as a township.

Crows Nest has nearly 70 residents, although some only live in the neighborhood for part of the year, using their estates as summer homes. Houses in Crows Nest are rarely available for purchase and are listed starting at $2 million. Prospective buyers should note that a homeowner’s association provides security and snow removal, with monthly dues listed at $600. “This is an incredibly exclusive neighborhood,” says Reinhard Pollach, a realtor with Carpenter Realtors who listed a property on Sunset Lane. “It’s in a fantastic location, right by the river and not far from downtown, and is a very quiet area.” Houses are set back from the tree-lined street with long, winding driveways and gated entrances. Most houses are colonial revivals or Georgians, built in the 1900s, and featuring brick and stone facades. Some houses include Tudor features, including gable roofs and stately wooden beams. A few houses include additional gatehouses near the entrance of the properties, and others include private tennis courts. Behind the houses on the eastern side of Sunset Lane is a wide grassy field, perfect for a game of catch or taking a quiet stroll down to the riverside.

Students growing up in Crows Nest may attend schools in the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township, rated A-minus by Niche. A student may attend Crooked Creek Elementary School, rated B-plus by Niche, Westland Middle School, rated B-minus, and North Central High School, rated A and listed as the fourth-best public high school in Marion County.

After work and school, locals head to Holliday Park Nature Center. One of Indianapolis’ oldest parks, this 94-acre park features a nature center, playground and nearly four miles of trails leading down to the White River. There’s also the Holliday Park Ruins, an exhibit of architectural sculptures made of Indiana limestone, created by 19th century sculptor Karl Bitter. Every year in November, Holliday Park opens its ice rink for visitors to enjoy. They offer field trips, skating lessons and hockey lessons at the ice rink. In the summer, locals can join The Riviera Club, a private social club just across the White River from Sunset Lane. This club was founded and incorporated in 1933 and consists of 21 acres with three outdoor pools, two indoor pools, basketball courts, tennis courts and a gymnasium. Inside the club is a fitness center, dining rooms and ballrooms.

Head to Meridian Restaurant & Bar, an upscale restaurant serving New American dishes in a rustic-chic venue for dinner. This restaurant hosts live music and offers outdoor dining during warm months. Nearby, Graeter’s Ice Cream serves signature sundaes and small-batch scoops for dessert.

“This neighborhood is referred to by its inhabitants simply as ‘The Lane,’” says Pollach. “It’s got everything a family could want when looking for a large estate in a beautiful area.”
