The Fair neighborhood in Crystal lives up to its name
Located in Crystal, Minnesota, a Minneapolis suburb, Fair lives up to its name. Midcentury homes sit cozily amidst tall trees and well-kept lawns. “There are lots of older homes, post-World War II builds,” says Brent Peterson, a Realtor with Re/Max Results. “Tons of them. But it’s a great area.” Fair might also describe the neighborhood’s relatively affordable home prices. And with downtown Minneapolis only 10 miles away, residents have access to everything the Twin Cities has to offer. “You’re not bottled up in some nowhere-ville,” Peterson says. “You’ve got plenty of opportunities to get out, explore and do things.”
Expansive atmosphere surrounds midcentury ranch-style homes
Like much of Crystal, homes were mostly built in the midcentury. “Most of this stuff was built in the 50s and 60s,” Peterson says. “They built them for the folks who went to war and came back and bought a house.” Many homes are ranch-style, though some half-stories and bi-levels are scattered throughout the neighborhood. Mid-size trees provide shade and atmosphere, while open spaces and clean lawns give the neighborhood an expansive quality. While some of the neighborhood’s interior streets don’t have sidewalks, they are fairly quiet. The community is a mix of age groups. “There are a lot of first-time homebuyers,” Peterson says. “But I’ve sold to people in their 80s and people in their 20s.” Prices range from $235,000 to $520,000 for single-family homes, with a few newer and larger builds making up the higher end.
FAIR School-Crystal is an arts magnet middle school
Forest Elementary School, a little northwest of Fair in the Forest neighborhood, earns a C-plus from Niche. Robbinsdale Middle School earns a C. Robbinsdale Cooper Senior High School earns a C-plus and has curriculum options like Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate classes. Though it is right in the neighborhood and shares its name, FAIR School-Crystal, is actually a public magnet arts school, so students from across the Robbinsdale Area School District can attend. Niche gives FAIR School a C.
Minnesota Highway 100 connects Crystal to the Twin Cities
Residents can access several of the Twin Cities’ major thoroughfares. “It’s super central,” Peterson says. “You can get on Minnesota Highway 100 with ease. That’s one of the major arteries around town.” Downtown Minneapolis is about 9 miles away via Highway 100, and Interstate 94 is accessible about 4 miles north. North Memorial Health's Robbinsdale Hospital is about 3 miles away on County Road 81. The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is about 22 miles southeast. The neighborhood’s mellow interior streets are good for walking and biking, and Metro buses run along 36th Avenue North.
Plentiful recreation options at Grogan Park
Fair has few parks within its borders, but plenty of green space is nearby. The two small neighborhood parks are Kelly and Fair School parks, the latter of which borders the magnet school. Both have play equipment, sports courts, and open space. For a pocket of natural scenery, Hagemeister Pond Preserve Park is just across Douglas Drive. The trail has a segment of floating boardwalk, and residents might spot wildlife while exploring. Less than 1 mile from Fair, Grogan Park is home to the Crystal Community Center, Crystal Skate Park, and, during summer, the Crystal Cove Aquatic Center, which includes a pool, diving area boards and water slides. “The aquatic center is a big draw,” Peterson says.
Milton’s is a Crystal favorite
The neighborhood is close to several shopping and dining areas. The Crystal Shopping Center is less than 2 miles north, with a Target and chain stores. Downtown Robbinsdale is just across Highway 100 and is home to several restaurants, including Travail. “Travail has phenomenal food,” Peterson says. “That’s been rated a top restaurant in Minnesota.” Another popular spot, Milton’s, serves American fare from its kitchen at Fair’s southeast corner. “Milton’s, that’s a heavy hitter,” Peterson says. “SteveO’s and Big Louie’s are good local bar spots.” Residents can pick up groceries at Almsted’s Fresh Market on the neighborhood's northern edge or Cub Foods across Highway 100.
The Crystal Frolics are a chance for the city to celebrate
Crystal’s big annual event is called the Crystal Frolics, which takes place over a July weekend. Residents can gather for the parade, softball and pickleball tournaments, live music and food and beverage vendors. Elision Playhouse stages theatrical productions at its location on 42nd Avenue. Crystal also runs a farmers market on Tuesday afternoons from June through September.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
