Compact, centrally located city in southeast LA
Cudahy is a small, densely residential city in southeast Los Angeles. The second smallest city in LA County, its location makes for easy commuting to south and central LA, as do the interstates, bike trails and bus lines. While the vast majority of Cudahy is residential, the area’s arterial roads are lined with shops and restaurants, so locals don’t have to go far to do their shopping or enjoy a night out on the town. “The best part of Cudahy has got to be its location,” says local Realtor Matt Tilley, who has worked in the area for over a decade. You’re close to the highway, close to shopping, and it’s easy to get downtown, so long as traffic isn’t too rough.”

Assortment of Spanish-style properties
The city features a mixture of low-rise apartment buildings, smaller ranches and bungalows, and a few larger, more modern Spanish-style homes. Most properties in the area are built along private cul-de-sacs instead of public streets, allowing for denser residential construction but limiting yard space. The median home price is $575,000, while the average single-family home offers just under 1,500 square feet of finished space.

Jaime Escalante Elementary has a C-plus grade on Niche, while Bell Gardens Intermediate School has a C on the site. Bell Gardens High School also has a C-plus rating on Niche, and is known as the alma mater of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Eddie Cochran.

Local parks and the LA River Bikeway
If residents feel like stretching their legs, the city has several small, well-maintained parks and playgrounds evenly spaced throughout its blocks, including Clara Street Park and Lugo Park. Locals can also hop on the 29-mile Los Angeles River Bikeway, which runs along its namesake river, going all the way from Long Beach to just south of Downtown LA. When completed, the path will stretch all the way to Glendale.

Classic restaurants like Chris’s Hamburgers plus plenty of shopping
Dining options in Cudahy are typical of Southern Los Angeles. Chris’s Hamburgers is a city institution that serves solid breakfasts as well as lunch and dinner, and those looking for something lighter can head to El Ceviche Loco for seafood. There are also a number of Lebanese spots in the area if you’re in the mood for kebab tacos or burritos. And, of course, there are a number of more traditional taquerias scattered throughout the area, along with a few carnicerias if you prefer to make your own.
Local shopping is concentrated in a few small shopping centers along Atlantic Ave., which runs through the middle of Cudahy, and where you can find groceries and pharmacies. There are also a number of larger shopping centers just outside the city’s borders. Locals looking for boutique shopping and big-ticket events can head to downtown LA, just 8 miles north — though traffic can get pretty hairy.

Block Parties and Southeast LA Pride
When it comes to local events, there isn’t too much going on in the city beyond a few annual block parties and some Fourth of July fireworks. However, the neighboring city of Bell, which borders Cudahy to the north, does host some major events throughout the year, including the new Southeast LA Pride Festival. Parkwest Bicycle Casino, located just across the L.A. River Basin from Cudahy, also has regular music, boxing, and UFC matches.

Interstate 710
Interstate 710 passes by the city, offering a direct route to Long Beach and East LA. Downtown is just an 8-mile drive north of Cudahy, but that 8-mile drive can take 40 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. “Things can get pretty jammed up during rush hour,” says Tilley, and unfortunately there aren’t any metro stops in that part of town.” There are a number of bus lines running through the community, though figuring out routes and schedules can take a bit of work.
