Serene residential suburb in western Cupertino

In the western section of Cupertino is the idyllic, residential neighborhood of McClellan, a suburb bordering some of the city’s most popular outdoor spots. McClellan is tucked comfortably alongside the hills of Stevens Creek County Park and the Rancho San Antonio Nature Preserve, both part of the expansive Santa Cruz Mountain Range. The neighborhood’s name is derived from the McClellan Ranch Preserve, a historic piece of land and a nod to the area’s agriculture-centric background. Cupertino, which borders San Jose to the east and Los Altos to the north, is internationally renowned as the headquarters of Apple and has firmly established itself as a major Silicon Valley powerhouse. Jane Shen, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker and 30-year Cupertino resident, says that although Cupertino lacks a traditional downtown area, it makes up for it with its vibrant tech-focused community and a strong academic scene propelled by the city’s award-winning public school district. McClellan has an overall CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

Exploring the neighborhood's pristine outdoor spaces

One of McClellan’s primary draws is its proximity to sprawling parks and outdoor spaces tucked into the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. At McClellan Ranch, visitors can walk along nature-lined pathways while listening to birds sing and the occasional metalwork noise from the ranch’s on-site blacksmith shop. With its barns, nature center, beehives and small gift shop, the ranch almost resembles a small western town. Stevens Creek County Park and the Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve contain several miles of multi-use trails dotted with scenic overlook spots. Golfers can use one of many courses in the nearby foothills, including the Deep Cliff Golf Course and Blackberry Farm, which offers a quick, nine-hole course for a casual game. Meanwhile, Deep Cliff has a challenging 18-hole course.

Grades six through eight might then head to John F. Kennedy Middle, also rated A-minus, before later going to Monta Vista High School, an A-plus-rated institution. For their 2025 rankings, Niche named Monta Vista among the top 30 best college prep high schools across California. Niche also named the school No. 18 on their “Best High Schools for STEM in the San Francisco Bay Area” 2025 list. Luxury mountainside homes

Large single-family homes in McClellan sit along quiet, winding roads snaking between the neighborhood’s schools to the east and the regional parkland to the west. These secluded properties often have French-inspired and Mediterranean-style architectural features, such as terracotta roofs that peek out over coniferous trees scattered throughout the neighborhood. Homes in this desirable mountainside community vary in price between approximately $2 million and more than $5 million. Townhouses and condos are clustered on the edges of the neighborhood and cost between $1.2 million and $3 million. Shen notes that the city’s strong housing market has homes selling within 15 days and often above asking price, which has resulted in a pricey median housing price of around $3 million throughout all of Cupertino.

Stevens Creek shopping

The area is largely residential and mostly free of commercial plazas. Most daily shopping needs can be fulfilled with a short trip down Stevens Creek Boulevard to the Crossroads shopping mall, where residents can find department stores, several restaurants and grocery stores. “In Cupertino, there isn’t much of a downtown area, however, roughly six or seven years ago, the city developed this area called Cupertino Main Street; its near Apple Park and it’s got restaurants and hotels. It’s just really become a place where people like to gather,” Shen says. For a morning pick-me-up, Philz Coffee is the spot where people grab their caffeine before work. Dish Dash is a popular regional chain restaurant specializing in classic Middle Eastern menu items like falafels and tabouli.

Cupertino commuting

Running adjacent to this neighborhood is Route 85, a main highway that connects to Interstate 280, a major regional thoroughfare. Apple employees in Cupertino can enjoy free bus services for easy transit to the office. “Employees can start working as soon as they get on the bus because the busses are equipped with Wi-Fi,” Shen says. For additional public transit options, the Valley Transportation Authority operates busses and light rail trains throughout the greater San Jose metropolitan area. McClellan is a 13-miles away from the San Jose Mineta International Airport, which offers dozens of direct domestic flights and some international flights.
