In 1912, a frightened eight-year-old Montgomery County, Texas boy exclaimed that he was going to "cut around the corner and shoot through the bushes in a minute" to escape the heated conflict happening among his neighbors over the use of the community building. He had no idea that the words he uttered would one day become the official name of his town. Today, Cut and Shoot, a small city 40 miles north of Houston, may top many an unusual town names list, but its easy country lifestyle with attractively priced homes and nearby conveniences is this community's true claim to fame. "Cut and Shoot is a happy medium for someone who wants country living but doesn't want to be too far from amenities," says Realtor Stephony Garrett, The Home Sync Team lead with eXp Realty. "I had a couple who were looking for a home but wanted different things. He wanted to be somewhat secluded without neighbors too close, but she didn't want to travel far distances to run errands or go shopping. Cut and Shoot was the perfect happy medium for them."

In Cut and Shoot, you'll find a mix of Traditional and ranch-style homes built from the 1960s to current day new construction, many with 1 or more acres of land. Home sizes range from 720 to over 4,000 square feet, with three to five bedrooms, and sale prices fall anywhere between $150,000 to $850,000. "Cut and Shoot homes have always been primarily mixed," Garrett says. "You'll find single-family alongside mobile home communities, but they've been breaking ground on several new developments over the past few years, so it's growing. And most of the newer areas sell for around $250,000, offering more affordable options for people looking to live there."

Area children attend schools in the highly-rated Conroe Independent School District, which Niche considers the best of Montgomery County's ISDs, including Austin Elementary and Moorhead Junior High, both earning a B-plus Niche rating. Next, students move on to Caney Creek High School, which receives an overall rating of B from Niche.

A sunny afternoon at nearby Carl Barton, Jr. Park is time well spent with its fishing pond, picnic pavilion and 200 acres of sports fields, playgrounds and walking trails. On rainy days, let the kids burn off some energy with a spin around the Rainbow Roller Rink, home of the Conroe Scallywags junior roller derby team. Or take your pick of fun activities, including bowling, arcade games, billiards and axe throwing at Time to Spare Entertainment. When spring rolls around, mark your calendar for the annual Montgomery County Fair and Rodeo at the nearby fairgrounds. A local tradition since 1957, the county fair welcomes over 50,000 visitors each year to enjoy livestock and non-livestock shows and contests, a festive carnival, thrilling professional rodeos and more.

Replenish those calories spent axe throwing at locally-owned Willie's BBQ & Burgers in the heart of Cut and Shoot, where you can fill up on juicy choice Angus chuck burgers, like the spicy jalapeno bacon cheeseburger or smokey barbecue, from chopped brisket to tender ribs. Those who prefer queso over barbecue sauce will want to try out another local establishment, Leija's Mexican Restaurant, where folks can chow down on classic dishes like enchiladas verdes or fajita de pollo. For groceries and other everyday essentials, head about 6 miles west of Cut and Shoot to Conroe, where you'll find numerous stores, including an H-E-B supermarket and a Walmart Supercenter.
