Defining Dallas Center
Dallas Center is a city located about 30 miles west of downtown Des Moines. “It’s a smaller town, and some people consider it a suburb of Des Moines,” says Elli Jennings, Realtor for RE/MAX and lifetime area resident. “It’s great for people who want more privacy or more land.” The flat, even streets of the town are bordered by full-grown maple and beech trees with sidewalks passing beneath. In the middle of the community, the Heartland Co-Op’s towering grain elevator is one of many in the State aimed at working directly with farmers to improve grain access in the region. A block over, locals can find several eateries, Roy R. Estle Memorial Library and Heritage Park. Homes around the park showcase a variety of architectural styles from the 1900s, and newer places along the edge of town peek out over fields as far as the eye can see.

There are several new developments of three-bedroom homes being constructed along Sycamore Street; they are priced around $340,000, on average. At the corner of Walnut and 14th Streets, there are a few locally owned restaurants to explore. Sugar Grove Goods serves expresso-based drinks as well as quick options for breakfast or lunch. Korner Kone Eats N’ Treats offers subs, sandwiches and both soft-serve and hand-scooped ice cream. For burgers and pasta, residents can try Five Points Bar and Grill. The HandleBar, along Sugar Grove Avenue, is a popular place to grab a beer, and it also has a full menu. Casey’s and The Baker’s Pantry carry some dry goods and home essentials. For more grocery options, people can drive to Aldi on the western edge of Des Moines, which is about 10 miles away, or Fareway Meat and Grocery in Adel, about an 8-mile drive from Dallas Center.

Dallas Center-Grimes Community School District
Students who live in Dallas Center may attend Dallas Center Elementary School, which rates a B-plus on Niche. If a grade is at capacity, students may be bused to other elementary schools within the Dallas Center-Grimes Community School District. Students in fifth and sixth grades will attend Dallas Center-Grimes Middle School, which has a grade of A-minus. Dallas Center-Grimes Oak View just opened in 2021 and teaches seventh and eighth-grade students in the district. It also earns an A-minus, and it offers different extracurricular clubs each quarter, allowing students to explore multiple interests. With a B-plus score, Dallas Center-Grimes High School has a strong sports program; their basketball, volleyball and girls’ soccer teams recently made it into state competitions. They also offer drama, jazz band, and choral programs in which Oak View students may participate.

The town manages several parks and recreational facilities, which are open from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. each day. Mound Park has tennis and pickleball courts, a playground and an ice-skating rink in winter months. There are sports fields at the Burnett Recreational Complex, as well as a 1-mile walking path. At the Brenton Arboretum, about 2.5 miles south, locals and school groups can explore native Midwest plants. The Raccoon River Valley Trail, which cuts diagonally through town, links with the Clive Greenbelt Trail, allowing locals to travel around Iowa via bicycle.
