A ditty for the homes in Daly City
Tight rows of tract housing are the norm in Crocker. Brightly colored condos and midcentury modern homes are perched on the hillside and with their multiple levels, they offer sweeping views of San Bruno Mountain. Single-family homes range from $600,000 to $1.4 million, while condos can cost anywhere from $500,000 to $900,000. Different parts of the neighborhood also have a different feel. “The northern half of Crocker is more on the noisy side because of its proximity to Mission, but if you live closer to the park, then it’s a different story,” Adricula says. With so many houses built in the 1950s, this has also resulted in many eventual renovations and updates. While interiors have become modernized, the distinct exteriors have remained the same, which is how they also inspired song lyrics. While folk singer and political activist Malvina Reynolds was growing up in Daly City in the 1950s, she noticed the colorful box-like homes sprouting up around the area. Observing the homogeny of the houses as well as that of the people occupying them, Reynolds was inspired to write a song called “Little Boxes.” Fellow singer-songwriter Pete Seegar recorded it in 1963, sharing the portrait of Daly City's little houses with the rest of the world.

To the west of Crocker, Thornton State Beach Park’s seaside cliffs make the perfect vantage point for seeing the hang gliders coast along the San Francisco Bay. Nearby Mission Hills Park’s small playground and Frankfort Park’s basketball court are some of the smaller amenities.Engagement and support at school for Crocker students
