Living and commuting in Crocker
Named for the street that zigzags through the neighborhood, Crocker sits on the northeastern edge of Daly City and faces both the mountains and the coastline. Its sloping hills are generously dotted with tract homes and neighborhood parks. It’s also quite easy to get around here. "You can cycle to the train station or the subway on Mission Street and go anywhere in California or even the United States as the train connects to Amtrak,” says eXp Realtor Noriel Adricula, a Bay Area local. “You can even take your bike on the train and leave it at the subway's parking stations.” Combined with Daly City's nine-mile drive to San Francisco, it proves great for commuters working in the Bay Area. Every year also brings many exciting events, owing much to Crocker's local color and diverse community.

A ditty for the homes in Daly City
Tight rows of tract housing are the norm in Crocker. Brightly colored condos and midcentury modern homes are perched on the hillside and with their multiple levels, they offer sweeping views of San Bruno Mountain. Single-family homes range from $600,000 to $1.4 million, while condos can cost anywhere from $500,000 to $900,000. Different parts of the neighborhood also have a different feel. “The northern half of Crocker is more on the noisy side because of its proximity to Mission, but if you live closer to the park, then it’s a different story,” Adricula says. With so many houses built in the 1950s, this has also resulted in many eventual renovations and updates. While interiors have become modernized, the distinct exteriors have remained the same, which is how they also inspired song lyrics. While folk singer and political activist Malvina Reynolds was growing up in Daly City in the 1950s, she noticed the colorful box-like homes sprouting up around the area. Observing the homogeny of the houses as well as that of the people occupying them, Reynolds was inspired to write a song called “Little Boxes.” Fellow singer-songwriter Pete Seegar recorded it in 1963, sharing the portrait of Daly City's little houses with the rest of the world.
