Saint Francis
Cuisine and shops with stories
Saint Francis’ restaurant scene tells the story of a neighborhood where Asian Americans barred from living in Westlake during the 1940s made their homes and founded thriving businesses. "Daly City is one of the few places where you can find a number of Filipino restaurants in one place," Alvarenga says. Skyline Plaza is home to a 99 Ranch Market, which carries imported Asian staples, as well as to a diverse dining scene. Majikku Ramen specializes in Japanese fare, especially noodle soups and sushi, while the family-owned Sheng Kee Bakery next door sells Taiwanese artisanal pastries like mooncakes. Immediately south of Saint Francis, the Serramonte Center hosts several brand-name retailers like Macy’s and Target as well as the weekly Daly City Farmers’ Market on Thursdays and Saturdays.Buses and trains from Saint Francis to San Francisco
Saint Francis’ location at the center of Daly City means that both the Interstate 280 and the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system are easily accessible. San Francisco’s downtown can be reached within an 11-mile drive up I-280 and Highway 101, while the Colma BART station - seven blocks east of Saint Francis - offers a 28-minute commute. The BART and local bus lines also open up opportunities for travel to other major Bay Area destinations, including the San Francisco International Airport. This neighborhood has a hospital of its own, the AHMC Seton Medical Center.Hiking and golfing near the Pacific Ocean
While Saint Francis may be a downtown neighborhood focused mainly on retail and residential life, small parks like the Alta Loma Tot Lot offer local venues for outdoor play. Just west of the neighborhood, the beachfront Mussel Rock Park features 250 acres of rocky cliffs, flowery hillsides and ocean vistas accessible along several hiking trails. The Lake Merced Golf Club, founded in 1922, has hosted the Northern California Junior Golf Championship for nearly a century and invites members and their guests to play on a recently revamped course.Spanish-style and postwar tract homes line quiet streets
Like the rest of Daly City, Saint Francis was born from the postwar suburbanization of San Francisco. Much of this neighborhood’s housing stock dates from the 1950s to the 1970s, and pastel-colored tract homes mix with Spanish Mission-style residences along Saint Francis’ grid-patterned streets. Three- to four-bedroom split-levels can sell for between $800,000 and $1.5 million, while four- to six-bedroom homes can fetch between $1.5 million and $2 million. Most residences have small patches of front lawn with shrubbery, and driveway sizes vary based on lot size. Though this neighborhood sits at an incline, sidewalks add to Saint Francis’ walkability.Career-focused education at Westmoor High
Thomas Edison Elementary School receives a B rating from Niche, as does the Fernando Rivera Intermediate School. Westmoor High School, which scores an A-minus, features strong STEM and college readiness programs and offers career pathways in fields from computer science to construction.
