Neighboring Wilmot and divided from Alexandria by a small mountain, Danbury is a little town in Merrimack County. “It’s very rural, with a bunch of local sustainable farms and farm shares. They also have a revamped general store that was recently featured on Chronicle,” says Kristin Angeli, a North Sutton native and Realtor with Angeli & Associates Real Estate who has sold homes in Merrimack County for about 10 years. “Danbury is also known for Ragged Mountain for its skiing. I’m there all the time with my kids in the winter.” With a topography of hills and valleys and known for its ski slopes and the Danbury Bog Wildlife Management Area, this area is almost entirely covered in New Hampshire wilderness. Neighborhoods are hidden down country back roads or along Ragged Mountain Highway and Route 4.

Hitting the slopes at Ragged Mountain Resort
The Ragged Mountain Resort is one of the biggest employers in town and is a popular skiing destination. With over 50 trails, wedding-worthy views and three eateries on-site, Ragged Mountain makes up a lot of the entertainment in Danbury. For those who like to hike, “the Northern Rail Trail runs all the way through Wilmot and Danbury. I love taking my kids biking on the trail, and in the wintertime, I think you can snowmobile on it,” Angeli says. The Northern Rail Trail is 58 miles long and stretches all the way to Lebanon. In the center of town on Route 4, the Danbury Country Store labels itself as a welcome center for trail hikers. There are several ponds in the area and in nearby Wilmot, such as Eagle Pond and Tannery Pond, though some are private access only.
You are bound to feast your eyes on Ragged Mountain as you pass through the Danbury Bog.

Shops and restaurants in nearby Bristol
In addition to Ragged Mountain’s restaurants and the Danbury Country Store, there is also the Haunting Whisper Vineyard & Spirits, which sits on 75 acres and is a leaf-viewing spot in autumn. Folks also travel to neighboring areas like Bristol to shop and dine. On the way to Bristol, shoppers can stop at Hannaford for groceries on Route 104, also known as Pleasant Street. Once in town, they can run errands at O’Reilly Auto Parts or Dollar General. Central Square Street is Bristol’s little downtown, flanked on all sides by locally owned restaurants. One of them is LinCross, which is known for its steak and cheese sandwiches and pizza, and for being a good spot for a beer and a sports game. Next door, The Purple Pit Coffee Lounge, serves sandwiches, salads and lattes. Gina’s Place down the road is a popular breakfast spot, and Shackett's Brewing Company pours craft beer.

Newfound Area public school programs and athletics
Danbury falls within the Newfound Area School District, which is graded an overall C on Niche. “There is a tiny elementary school in Danbury which is very sweet when they’re little, but as they get older, students have to start bussing to Newfound schools in Bristol. That means they’re dealing with really long bus times, and some kids will be on a bus for an hour or more in the mornings and evenings,” Angeli says. Danbury Elementary School is graded a B and has fewer than 100 students. Students may then move on to Newfound Memorial Middle School, which is graded a C, and then Newfound Regional High School which scores a C-plus. Both schools are located in Bristol, about 10 miles northeast via Route 104. High school students can join the Newfound Bears Alpine Skiing team and downhill race or participate in a study abroad trip.

Getting to Concord and neighboring towns
Danbury’s proximity to major highways makes it a convenient place to settle down. Whether working and commuting in nearby towns or cities or heading to Boston or the ocean for the weekend, Route 4 can get locals where they want to be. Concord is about 33 miles south via Route 4, so drivers can get to work or to the Concord Hospital in less than an hour. Manchester and the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport are about 50 miles away, and though the route has tolls, commuters will arrive in a little over an hour.
Danbury locals can escape to the Northern Rail Trail for a nature filled bike ride.

Possible flooding after heavy rainfall in Danbury
Because of its many ponds and waterways, such as Bog Pond, Smith River and Gulf Brook, some areas in Danbury are known to overflow or collect standing water after periods of heavy rainfall, which can lead to road closures and delays.
