El Macero
Suburban Neighborhood in Davis, California
Yolo County 95618
Contemporary ranch-style homes with golf course views
Home and lot sizes here are larger than in most surrounding communities, and mature trees and shrubs offer shade and a sense of privacy. “The lots are large, the trees are tall; if a home is properly priced and in good condition, it's going to sell," says Andrew Skaggs, a longtime resident of El Macero and a real estate broker with Echelon and Skaggs Real Estate Group. Most of the ranch-style homes here were built in the 1970s or ‘80s and have a single story and three to five bedrooms; vinyl siding and cross-gabled roofs are common, and some homes have Spanish-style details like arched doorways and barrel-tile roofs, or Tudor Revival-style half-timbered exteriors. Backyards are largely filled by in-ground pools and patios, and a handful of homeowners have installed backyard pickleball courts. Five-to-six-bedroom homes with private pools range from $1.8 million to $2.2 million, but most home prices here depend on lot size. Homes on quarter- or half-acre lots range from $1.1 million to $1.6 million, while those on smaller lots range from $800,000 to $1 million.Tennis courts, golf course, and other club amenities
The El Macero Country Club is among the biggest draws for residents here. Its168-acre,18-hole private golf course is peppered with oak and sycamore trees, and has hosted players like Ronald Reagan and Tiger Woods. Adjacent to the golf course are two recently resurfaced tennis courts and a heated 25-meter pool with six lanes for competitive swimming. “Running, walking, biking, and hiking are all popular here,” Skaggs says. “There are trails all over the neighborhood and wider area; people love to get outdoors. Many locals go duck hunting just a few minutes outside El Macero.” The Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, about 5 miles east, is popular with birdwatchers and allows seasonal waterfowl hunting. Pioneer Park and Rogers Mini Playground are just to the north, featuring small and large playgrounds.A-rated Davis Joint Unified District schools
Children in El Macero typically start school at Pioneer Elementary before moving on to Francis Harper Junior High School, both of which receive A ratings from Niche. Extracurricular activities at Francis Harper Junior High include the Tree Harper Club, which works to beautify the campus by planting trees and flowers and maintaining the school’s oak grove. The A-plus-rated Davis Senior High School, which serves district kids in grades 10 to 12, offers the Citrus Circuits Robotics Team, which won three regional competitions in 2022. The well-regarded University of California, Davis is about 5 miles from the neighborhood, and the city's largest employer; its students and faculty make up almost two-thirds of Davis' population.Country Club socials and holiday parties
The country club keeps a packed calendar of social events and activities for members, including Wednesday Family Night Dinners with trivia or bingo and an annual Ladies Fashion Show. Kid-friendly events include end-of-school and back-to-school parties, as well as Halloween Pumpkin Carving, Santa Brunches and tennis summer camps.

Though there's no commercial development within the neighborhood, the country club has a private restaurant that crafts seasonal menus with produce from local growers; for instance, they source heirloom tomatoes from Capay Organic Farms and herbs and lettuce from Del Rio Botanicals. Just outside the neighborhood, El Macero Shopping Center has locally owned eateries like Taqueria Guadalajara Grill, which serves classic Mexican cuisine and has a large outdoor patio. Nugget Market, a family-owned grocery store chain, anchors the shopping center.
