Hearthstone
Suburban Neighborhood in Dayton, Ohio
Montgomery County 45410, 45432
Starter homes overseen by a council
Hearthstone homes sit closely together, but mid-size yards, mature trees and driveways to the side of homes put a little breathing room between neighbors. Few streets have sidewalks, and most lawns lead to curbless roads. Decorative shrubs, covered porches and flapping flags add color and life to properties, making the neighborhood feel cozy and established. "Hearthstone offers some great opportunities for young families or people looking for starter homes because the homes tend to be a bit older and smaller," says Kerry Santiago, Realtor at Coldwell Banker Heritage Realtors, who's sold all over Dayton. "So they're great for first-time buyers, anyone on a budget or buyers looking to renovate." Home styles range from bungalows and Craftsman-style homes to two-story American Foursquares and Dutch Colonials. Prices range between $55,000 and $200,000 based on condition, and Goris-May says values increase as more homes are renovated. A community council oversees the neighborhood, planning events and keeping residents updated through an active Facebook page. The council also covers the neighboring areas of Belmont and Eastmont.Popular private school option right outside Hearthstone
Students are within the Dayton Public Schools District. Kids start at Cleveland Elementary School, which received the State of Ohio Momentum Award in 2024 and has a C-minus grade from Niche. Next is Wogaman Middle School, which has a D-plus, followed by Belmont High School, which earns a C-plus. The school offers various academic programs, from Advancement Placement to College Credit Plus, and specialized student organizations. One such organization is the Junior Council on World Affairs (JCOWA), where students meet monthly to explore and discuss global issues. Santiago says private schools, like nearby Archbishop Carroll High School, are a significant draw to the area because Hearthstone residents are eligible for school subsidies. Niche gives Archbishop Carroll High School an A-minus and rates it the third-best Catholic high school in Dayton.Improving disc golf skills at Belmont Park
For recreation, locals head to Cleveland Park next to the elementary school or the 55-acre Belmont Park. Various youth leagues meet on the grassy sports fields, and groups play tennis on the courts or picnic in the shade. Runners take advantage of the paths, while disc golfers hone their skills on the public course. Lohrey Recreation Center is also part of the park, offering an indoor pool, fitness room and after-school programs. Iron Horse Trail passes through the neighborhood, stretching over 19 miles throughout the city. It connects to Creekside Trail and Iron Horse Park.Thanksgiving day pie from Mehaffies
Linden Avenue is the neighborhood's primary commercial hub. Small restaurants line the street, serving everything from American classics to Mexican fare. "We love Hasty Tasty Pancake House and the family-owned Elsa's," says Santiago. "Their famous Bad Juan cocktail is amazing. It's so intense that you're only allowed to have three." Toby's Tavern has plenty of regulars, and Mehaffies Pies has been a Dayton staple since 1930. Locals prep for the holidays by pre-ordering their Thanksgiving pies and visiting the shop on Pi Day (March 14). At Eastown Shopping Center, people browse Citi Trends, Village Discount Outlet and Dollar Store. Grocery stores like Sammy's Supermarket and Kroger are less than 2 miles away.Highway on and off ramps to the north
Hearthstone has immediate access to Highway 35's on- and off-ramps. Although the highway causes excess noise during rush hours, it makes the 4-mile drive into downtown Dayton quick. It also connects to Interstate 675, which leads to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, one of the city's largest employers, in roughly 8 miles. Most residents are car-dependent, but the community does have public bus stops along Linden Avenue.
