Westwood
Uplifting neighbors at Wesley Community Center
Residents have many spaces to connect with nature and with one another. The northern section of the neighborhood is home to Wesleyan MetroPark, a 62-acre woodland surrounding Wolf Creek. The space offers a variety of activities, from cycling and fishing to cross-country skiing in the winter. The park also has Adventure Central, a youth education center that provides after-school and summer learning programs. While most of the center's programs focus on science and nature, kids also learn life skills, like civic duty and proper nutrition. Smaller green spaces in the area include Gettysburg Park and Residence Park. The Greater Dayton Recreation Center is half a mile from Westwood and has a fitness area, indoor pool and gymnasium. The neighborhood is also home to the Wesley Community Center, which provides after-school programs, workforce development and a community pantry in the heart of the neighborhood. The center serves vulnerable populations such as older adults, expectant parents, young children and individuals experiencing homelessness or unemployment. The center's colorful mural mirrors its values, illustrating progress through depictions of builders, artists and scholars collaborating. Another resource available to the community is the Dayton Metro Library West Branch. Less than 1 mile away, the library offers a variety of youth programming and adult services. "We get a lot of patrons who come in needing assistance with faxing, job applications and resume writing. We also have some of the highest statistics for computer use. A lot of people don't have internet services in their homes, so they come here to do work on the laptops and tablets available at the library," says Winnie Johnson, the library's branch manager.
Historic landmarks and restored homes
Housing styles include two-story American Foursquares, Cape Cods, bungalows and Craftsman styles. Most were built in the early to mid-20th century. It's common to see vacant properties needing some TLC throughout the landscape. However, with over 100 properties sold in the past year, vacancy is declining, and homes are steadily being renovated. "There's a lot of grant funding for home restoration, and if you're looking to get into a neighborhood near downtown Dayton before prices start rising, this is a great spot right now," says Realtor Jeffrey Roberts of Re/Max Alliance, who has 35 years of experience in the area. Prices range from $25,000 to $150,000, depending on a home's condition. Multifamily homes cost around $370,000. Garages are a rarity, so most residents rely on driveways and street parking. Front yards are typically small, with porches and front doors only a few steps from the sidewalk, but some homes sport expansive side yards. An important landmark connected to the community's history is in Westwood and on the National Register for Historic Places. Daniel Miller was a prominent early pioneer and the official first settler of the area, and his home became a station on the Underground Railroad in the 1840s and ‘50s.
Westwood Neighborhood Collaborative Network
Westwood residents are automatic members of the Westwood Neighborhood Collaborative Network. While the association's involvement in events has slowed recently, the group has worked in the neighborhood since 2007, orchestrating neighborhood cleanups, police partnerships and even a local business summit. Dues are $1 per meeting per person or $7 for the entire year per person.High schoolers have options, from STEM pathways to online classes
Dayton Public School offers flexible zoning to its families, but many kids start at Westwood Elementary School since it's right inside the neighborhood. The school, one of the largest in the district, earns a C-minus Niche score. Next is Wogaman Middle School, which has a D-plus rating, followed by Thurgood Marshall STEM High School, which has a C-minus. Students also have the option to attend Dayton Digital Academy, an online high school program, or the International School at Residence Park. The school teaches students in prekindergarten through sixth grade about international cultures and languages, and it also offers a prekindergarten through 12th grade English Learning program for newcomers to the United States. Niche has not rated either school.Businesses along West Third and North Gettysburg
Shopping and dining in Westwood is limited, but there are a few options along West Third Street and North Gettysburg Avenue. Various fast-casual chains specializing in burgers, fried chicken, and Chinese food are at the intersection of Hoover and North Gettysburg avenues. Estridge Grocery is known for its butcher services and meat selection, but the neighborhood is also within 2 miles of Save A Lot and Chamberlain Tomato Co, a local produce market. Family Dollar covers basic needs, and Westown Shopping Center off West Third Street has a variety of retailers. For more options, locals typically head downtown, 3 miles away.Commuting via Highway 35 or the bus
Commuting from Westwood is reasonably straightforward, especially with a major employer inside the neighborhood. The most popular route is Highway 35, about 1 mile south, because it connects with Interstate 75 and downtown Dayton. Residents reach Highway 35 via North James H McGee Boulevard or North Gettysburg Avenue. Many bus routes run along West Third Street and North Gettysburg Avenue, offering direct connections to downtown and other employers like the Dayton VA Medical Center. For flights, Dayton International Airport is 16 miles north.Crime
The CAP Index gives the area a crime score of 6 out of 10, above the national average of 4. However, some categories of violent crime are as high as 10 out of 10. The West District of the Dayton Police Department addresses this by regularly patrolling the neighborhood and supplying the community with crime-stopping resources.
