A Decatur community nestled in the woods
Surrounded by thick forests and roads that serpentine up and down the area’s hills, the Decatur neighborhood of Burningtree can seem like a hideaway to residents. That’s why many of them seek it out, says real estate agent Samuel Heflin of Re/Max Platinum. “It has a country feel,” Heflin says. “You can sit on your back porch and watch deer in the backyard.” At the same time, the neighborhood is a short drive from several shopping and dining hubs, and the community’s natural environment gives plenty to explore.
Many Burningtree homes are set on large plots of land and surrounded by trees.

These homes often have long driveways and can sit on lots of an acre or more. Several cul-de-sacs branch off Indian Hills Road Southeast. These homes are surrounded by dense woods. Lots and larger parcels of land typically list between $25,000 and $50,000 per acre. The neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge is home to thousands of birds
Burningtree Country Club has a golf course designed by George Cobb, who also designed the par-3 course at Augusta National Golf Club. While golf is a popular activity at the club, event coordinator Judy Morris says the real draw is the community’s togetherness. “It’s not snooty,” Morris says. “We have about 400 members, and they all are welcoming. They love this club and want to make it a success. You don’t have to prove yourself.” Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge is the area’s nature hub. Totaling about 35,000 acres, the refuge’s main function is protecting the thousands of waterfowl and other migratory birds that arrive each winter, including endangered species like the whooping crane. Visitors can observe these birds or go fishing, boating or hiking in the refuge’s oak-hickory forest. Veterans Park has swings for all ages and a merry-go-round. For more extreme action, GoFar USA Park has axe throwing, zip lines and a paintball range.

JW Steakhouse has elegant food in a simple setting
With few retail and dining options in the neighborhood, residents often drive to nearby Priceville to shop and eat, Heflin says. There, JW Steakhouse serves elegant dishes in a simple space with wooden booths and tables, and Libby’s Catfish and Diner has Southern comfort food. Residents can grab groceries at Priceville Foodland or Publix. They can also head about 7 miles to the Crossings of Decatur, a shopping center with stores like Target and Old Navy and eateries like Francesco’s Italian Restaurant. The family-run restaurant serves large portions of pasta and other Italian-American cuisine.
