Rural town spread across the countryside
Killingworth sits in the New England countryside about 30 miles from both Hartford to the north and New Haven to the west. “There is a 2-acre minimum zoning allowance for houses,” says Andrea Freibauer, a volunteer with the All Things Killingworth website and long-time resident of the area. “A lot of people have chickens, goats and horses. There’s an alpaca farm in town.” Enhancing the rural feel, there isn’t a typical small-town center, instead, government buildings line Higganum Road, often feeling as though they appear out of nowhere as residents drive down the road. Instead, Parmelee Farm act as the center of town activity. With all the trees and winding roads, whenever a storm comes through residents may have to be prepared for a loss of power. “We lose power a lot, but people adapt,” says Freibauer. “People have generators. Most of my life we didn’t have a generator and would fill up the bathtub in order to flush the toilet.” With a crime score of 1 from the CAP Index, lower than the national average of 4, the town of Killingworth has one resident state trooper for the town. “Since a lot of town is volunteer run, it really feels like everyone comes together,” says Freibauer. “It’s really the people that make the community.”
State parks and natural land
Much of Killingworth is shaded with mature trees and has two state parks within town limits. Chatfield Hollow State Park covers over 400 acres and includes an 18-mile network of trails for hikers to lace up boots or for mountain bikers to practice on some more technical routes. The park also has spots for rock climbers. Directly across the road from Chatfield Hollow, the western half of Forster Pond State Park is open to the public. Living up to its name, the park has a 32-acre pond that residents can fish in. The Irene Sheldon Park sits along Route 80 where residents can practice their swing on the baseball or tennis courts. The park also has a playground that children can run through as well as a horseshoe pit that residents can try out.

Hidden homes in the woods
Killingworth’s dense trees mean most neighbors hide from each other, with either long driveways disappearing into the trees or homes being spread out along the country roads. The stretches of roads are paved, but do weave through the countryside. Most of Killingworth is forested, so while homeowners may have an acre or more of land, it is generally not farmland and instead covered with trees and has other natural elements like small streams. The 55+ community Beechwood is the most visible, with manufactured homes neatly lined up along 12 streets. Prices begin at $80,000 and reach $230,000. “There was a huge uptick of people who moved here because of COVID,” Freibauer says. Colonial Revival and Cape Cod’s are the most common home styles, but there are a few Colonials built in the 1800s, as well as ranch and bi-level scattered throughout. Prices begin around $340,000 and reach $800,000. Some homes have solar panels or backyard pools and the older Colonials have updated plumbing and appliances.

Combined schools with Haddam to the north
Students begin at Killingworth Elementary for kindergarten through third grade before moving to Haddam-Killingworth Intermediate for fourth and fifth grade and Haddam-Killingworth Middle for sixth through eighth grade. At Haddam-Killingworth High, students can take Advanced Placement courses and earn college credit through the University of Connecticut’s Early College Experience. All four schools receive an A-minus from Niche.
Killingworth Elementary School serves kindergarten through third grade.
Haddam Killingworth Intermediate School serves students in grades 4 through 5.
Haddam Killingworth Middle serves students in grades 6 through 8 creating inclusive learning.
Haddam-Killingworth High School has 544 students in grades 9-12.

Parmelee Farm events for the town
The Parmelee Farm, now owned by the town, hosts a free Summer Concert and Car Cruise in June as well as a community garden where residents can purchase plots to grow fruits, vegetables and other plants. This 132-acre farm also has an Artisan Market in September for local vendors to sell clothing, plants, food and other handmade items.
Higganum Road restaurants and seasonal farm stand
There are few restaurants in Killingworth town limits, with all located on Higganum or Clinton Road. Crossroads has ice cream, while the Shipwreck Tavern serves shrimp tacos and cheeseburgers. In the Killingworth Village, residents can stop by the Twisted Goat or Copper Skillet. At the Leightsinger Farm, a seasonal farm stand sells farm-raised eggs and meat along with vegetables. About 4 miles west of the Killingworth town center, residents can get groceries from Robert’s Food Center.
