Often in this community, wilderness is the closest neighbor. “Deering residents have highly valued the ‘rural character’ of the town in successive Master Plans,” says Gary Samuels, Chair of the Conservation Commission and local Deering resident. “About 30% of the land is permanently protected from development, either by conservation easements or outright ownership by one of a few land trusts.” The Deering Reservoir and Deering Wildlife Sanctuary are two major natural areas in this region and provide many outdoor recreational opportunities for the community. The forests and natural reserves, scattered around the residential areas, are not the only features that encourage residents to explore. “Diversions in Deering include a large lake, which allows for all sorts of water sports, including boating, fishing and swimming." This lake, or Deering Reservoir as it is also referred to, feeds the Piscataquog River.

Hints of Colonial charm
A few of the original homes in Deering, built back in 1765 when the town was established, remain, contributing to the historic charm of the area. Hiking, hunting and High Five
Without having to drive the 30 miles south to Mount Monadnock, residents have access to 3.4 miles of long winding trails in the Deering Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is part of an 890-acre habitat and recreation area. At Pats Peak, locals choose one of the 28 slopes ranging in steepness, to test their endurance and balance. When the snow begins to melt and locals want to trade in their skis for hiking boots, they travel to one of the multiple trails in the area. “The Hedgehog Mountain Trail provides a moderately strenuous 6-mile walk with many views of Mount Monadnock to the southwest,” Samuels says. “At the southern end of the Hedgehog Trail is Wilson Hill, also known as High Five; this is among the highest points in town and provides great views from a peaceful meadow.” Breaking up the calm, hunters have luck in nearby wooded areas. “The Deering Fish and Game Club provides a well-regulated place for shooting, which, judging by the frequent noise, is popular.”

Head to Hanna's in Hillsboro
Deering embraces the natural surroundings over that of commercial developments. “There are no grocery stores or gas stations and no red lights,” Samuels says. In Hillsboro, locals find all the groceries they need to stock their cabinets from Shaw’s. While in town, locals head to Hanna’s Diner, a retro diner outfitted with neon signs and silver walls. Patrons return to Hanna's for their favorite breakfasts with a side of home fries. For lunch and dinner, locals walk up to the counter at Taco Beyondo and order their favorite quesadilla.
A neighborly education
Deering's shared school system with neighbor Hillsboro is within School Administrative Unit No. 34. Students attend Hillsboro-Deering Elementary School, Hillsboro-Deering Middle School and Hillsboro-Deering High School, which all earn a Grade of C from Niche. At Hillsboro-Deering High School students earn points throughout the year for community involvement that contributes toward fulfilling graduation requirements. Students may earn points in a variety of ways during their four years, including through school clubs, joining a sports team and showing support for their classmates at games.

When looking to take long-distance trips, Interstate 89 is the closest interstate at 18 miles away. While the Hawthorne-Feather Airpark in Deering has runways for private air travel, the closest regional airport is Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, which is 28 miles away. For everyday travel through Deering for groceries and additional entertainment, residents use state Route 149. Not only does this road connect them with outside adventure and necessities, but it also grants them direct access to Deering’s wildlife areas and natural parks.
