An agricultural hub outside Columbus
Not to be confused with the tiny Ross County of Kingston an hour and a half away, Kingston Township is one of 18 sections in Delaware County. Interstate 71 cuts through its forests and tilled land on the 28-mile journey to Columbus, but it’s more than freeway scenery. A stop anywhere along the stretch leads visitors to family owned and operated businesses making good use of their copious space and natural resources.
“One thing we’ve appreciated about Kingston Township is that if you’re an agricultural business at heart like us, they’ll embrace and greenlight your idea,” Todd Elliot, owner of Kingston Township’s Ohio Koi, shares. “We’ve expanded to offer goldfish, aquatic plants, and even work on the pond maintenance side—anything our customers need to sustain the life of their animals and supply a pond.”
Kingston’s farmhouses and wooded lots
Several acres of land—and the privacy that comes with all that space—are part of the package whether homeowners invest in a modern farmhouse and barn or purchase a 3-bedroom, 1-bath bungalow. Homes with more rooms and preexisting outdoor amenities from equestrian rinks to in-ground pools go for $600,000 to $900,000, while smaller homes go for $300,00 to $400,000. The rest of Kingston Township, however, is open space. Depending on where they’re zoned, these lots are suited for either building on or tilling. A smaller parcel of about 3 acres with easy freeway access and shared driveway space with neighboring lots will go for $135,000, while 8 to 10 acres of forest average $350,000.

How Kingston neighbors create home-grown recreation
Locals pick up their Fraser firs from their neighbor’s Christmas tree farm in the winter and grab a fresh bouquet from Tulip Ridge Flower Farm in the summer. With enough word of mouth and patience, a resident can establish themselves as a local expert on a type of product and even create an immersive experience on their property. “We had a muralist come up from North Carolina to paint last spring,” Eliott says. “We’ve tried to create a business with a positive, unique experience for families visiting, between the murals and Japanese garden designs so they can explore the property and gain inspiration and ideas.”
A weekend at local campgrounds like The Cardinal Center near Fargo gives residents space to hunt and fish, while Kingston’s own Big Walnut Golf Course attracts hobbyists and pros in the warmer months. The Hogback Ridge Trail system sits within Alum Creek State Park one township over.

Locals can head into nearby Sunbury for the rest of their essentials; the Kroger is a 6-to-8-mile drive away.
