Nestled in a valley less than 15 miles from Cincinnati, Dent, Ohio, is named for its topography. This small community, which spans nearly 6 square-miles in Green Township, sits on a depression, or a "dent" in the ground. Less than 12,000 people call the area home, and hilly neighborhoods branch off from major thoroughfares like Interstate 74 and Highway 52. Despite recent development, there are parts of the suburb that still have a rural feel: dirt roads sit on the edges of town, and some homes look out onto Mitchell Memorial Forest, which includes over 1,600 acres of hiking trails and fishing lakes. However, perhaps the area's most famous feature is the Dent Schoolhouse, which is "One of the top-rated haunted attractions in Ohio," according to Jacqueline Miranda-Hauke of Huff Realty. "People come from all over to visit," she adds, noting that it's the schoolhouse — and proximity to Cincinnati Children's in Green Township — that set Dent apart.

Varied housing options: condo units, midcentury designs and new traditionals
There's a mix of housing options in Dent, from condominium communities like Eagles Lake, where units range from around $100,000 to $200,000, to midcentury styles in neighborhoods beside I-74. The last few decades have seen plenty of new development in subdivisions like Greenshire, Wesselman Woods and Westchase Park, where prospective buyers will find steep gabled rooftops, multi-car garages and varied HOA fees. As is consistent with national trends, home values have appreciated steadily over the last five years in Dent, and, in the words of Miranda-Hauke, "The market's starting to heat up." Median prices now hover around $275,000, which is still lower than the U.S. median.

High marks for the Oak Hills Local School District
Dent is coveted for its association with Oak Hills Local School District, which earns an overall B-plus grade from Niche. The district gives students the opportunity to take an active role in in their own educations, allowing for advanced credit options starting in middle school and continuing throughout high school. There's also the Great Oaks Career Center and related programming available at the Diamond Oaks Campus, which is located off Harrison Road. The center offers a variety of career pathways including building skillsets in everything from veterinary assistance roles to welding and even surgical technology.
For grades 6-8, students of Colerain can attend Colerain Middle School.

Harrison Road shopping, dining and the Dent Schoolhouse on Halloween
Most of the suburb's shopping, dining and entertainment is concentrated along Harrison Road, which is lined with autobody shops, several big-box grocery options and fast-food food chains. There's a Cinemark for new blockbusters, and The Dent Schoolhouse — which was originally constructed in the late 1800s — and now attracts hundreds of visitors each year. It opens in September and offers tours throughout the Halloween season until November. There are also Christmas-themed events. "It's always busy," says Miranda-Hauke.
Veterans Park events and mountain biking in Mitchell Memorial Forest
Veterans Park, part of Green Township's parks system, spans 25 acres at the center of Dent. Residents can reserve picnic shelters next to grilling stations, and there are athletic fields for youth soccer and baseball teams. The park also hosts annual events like an Easter Egg Hunt, a Memorial Day ceremony in May and Winterfest at Nathanael Greene Lodge in December; there's hot chocolate, pictures with Santa and even real-life reindeer. In August, families look forward to games, activity booths and hot dog vendors at Kids Fun Day, which, like Winterfest, is sponsored by the Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Mitchell Memorial Forest borders Dent to the west and offers even more recreational opportunities, including 8 miles of mountain biking trails and catch-and-release fishing ponds.

Interstate 74 to Cincinnati
One of the community's appeals is its proximity to Cincinnati, which is less than 15 miles — or about 15 minutes — southeast via I-74. Given that Dent is still in the process of expanding, public transit is limited. Most commuters rely on their own cars, and it's common for residents to find work in the healthcare industry at institutions like Cincinnati Children's, which has a facility in Dent. There's also Good Samaritan Western Ridge, which is part of the larger TriHealth network. The nearest airport is Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International, about 25 miles away from Dent across the Ohio River.
