Berkeley is a walkable Denver suburb close to downtown

Berkely has the peaceful atmosphere of an established suburb while being just a few minutes from downtown Denver's active business scene. The neighborhood features tree-shaded sidewalks, expansive parks and highly rated public schools, with Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus routes providing easy access to downtown and the surrounding suburbs. The community is known for its charming commercial corridor on Tennyson Street, and many locals will walk or ride their bikes to nearby restaurants and recreation.

Charming historical homes in Berkeley

Most homes in Berkeley were built between the 1920s and 1950s, with a few late 19th century houses and brand-new builds mixed in. The streets are lined with cozy cottages, brick bungalows, craftsman-style homes and mid-century-modern builds with large windows. Fenced-in yards are typically dotted with mature trees and have enough space for small gardens and entertainment spaces. “While the market in Denver right now is pretty flat, Berkeley remains competitive,” says Rachel Gallegos, a local Realtor with Compass. “When a listing hits the market, it doesn’t stay for long because it’s a really desirable part of town. People love being close to parks, Tennyson and downtown.” Single-family homes start in the low $400,000s and reach around $2.7 million, with luxury 21st-century homes making up the high end of the market. “There was a mass development spree of townhouses on Tennyson a couple of years ago,” says Realtor Nick DiPasquale with West and Main Homes; most of the area’s multi-family units, which line Tennyson Street, range from the high $100,000s to around $1.2 million.

Independent businesses on Tennyson Street

Walkability is one of Berkeley’s biggest draws. Well-maintained sidewalks can take you to Tennyson Street, the community’s hub for locally owned shops and restaurants. “When people talk about Berkeley, they talk about Tennyson,” says DiPasquale. “You’ve got clothing stores, jewelers, and great restaurants and bars. There are all kinds of things to do there.” When exploring the commercial corridor, you can:

  • Stop for a quick cup of coffee at Huckleberry Roasters
  • Enjoy a pizza and a craft beer at Hops & Pie
  • See a concert at the Oriental Theater, a venue that has been serving the area since the 1920s
  • Swing by Lady Jones, a high-end boutique offering clothing and fine jewelry
For groceries and essentials, the neighborhood is also home to Natural Grocers and Safeway.

Outdoor spaces and recreation close to home

“For a city that likes to be outside, Berkeley provides that. We have so many great outdoor options. When the weather is nice, those parks are packed,” DiPasquale says. In Berkeley Lake Park, you'll find tennis courts, a seasonal pool, a dog park, walking trails and the Scheitler Recreation Center, home to indoor basketball courts and a gym. The park’s namesake lake is a popular spot to fish for largemouth bass and bluegill. Less than a mile away, Rocky Mountain Lake Park has a waterside walking loop, a large playground and two baseball diamonds. “Both parks are really popular among runners and dog owners due to the trails,” says Gallegos. The public Willis Case Golf Course is also close by and offers Rocky Mountain views and a bar and grill overlooking the course.

Public transit and city access

Even though Berkeley’s residential streets have a quiet, suburban feel, locals are less than 5 miles from downtown. “I like Berkeley because it’s a really unique neighborhood community, with its various parks, shopping on Tennyson and proximity to Downtown, Regis and Interstate 70,” says DiPasquale. “It’s uniquely situated, and you get a lot of diversity from the city.” When it comes to traveling across the city, you have options:

  • RTD operates bus stops along 44th and 38th avenues.
  • The 60th/Sheridan-Arvada Gold Strike light rail station is a few miles north and offers routes to Union Station and Wheat Ridge.
  • I-70 sits directly north of the neighborhood and can take drivers east and west to communities like Golden and Aurora.

There are a lot of seemingly useless botiques and such near where I live. However a lot of people go for that, so I suppose it works. There is, however, everything I need within a ten minute walk of where I live. If I did not own a car, I would likely only be inconvenienced when I wanted to leave the city, and during my commute (because I work strange hours).
