Marking history through architecture
Neoclassical columns and a wrap-around veranda grace the exterior of the Montclair Civic Building, providing a glimpse into the past of this Colorado community. The Molkery – as the civic building is more commonly known – was built in 1888 as a dairy barn and is the reason Montclair became one of the first neighborhoods to seek historic district recognition. Architecture tells the story of this neighborhood with modern designs neighboring more traditional home styles. Parks are prominent across Montclair, with recreational opportunities spread from Mayfair Park’s playground to Kittredge Park’s walking path. The neighborhood’s primary thoroughfare, East Colfax Avenue, connects residents with restaurants, retail and Downtown Denver for more shopping, dining and entertainment options. “Because Montclair doesn’t have that Hilltop name, it’s more affordable, and the location is great because you have access to the airport, to get to Downtown Denver and the tech center, which is where there’s lots of business and where the workforce is,” says John Valdez, a Broker with Keller Williams Advantage Realty who has sold Denver real estate for over 10 years.

Mayfair forts to Montclair picnics
Under Mayfair Park’s playground roof, children pretend they’re in a fort, climbing down and sliding when it is time to try the swings. Four-legged friends play fetch with their owners in the park’s open field broken up by picnic tables. On the other side of town, at Kittredge Park, walkers take the paved sidewalk loop around the playground where children play and the field where dogs catch frisbees. Tennis players battle on Montclair Park’s court, while picnickers enjoy lunches at tables under shade trees. This park is also where locals can rent out The Molkery, adding a historical element to their private events.

Jersey Street eats and everyday essentials
Whether seeking savory or sweet, Montclair has a place to eat along Jersey Street. On one corner, diners decide between chicken croquettes and cheese bread in the Padoca Brazilian Bakery & Market’s display case. Meanwhile, on the other end, they savor prime rib specials under the glow of neon beer signs at Bertha’s Baja Bistro. “They’ve been developing off Colorado Boulevard and around 11th where Rose Medical Center used to be, and now they created this cool town center there, which is around a 5-minute drive from Montclair’s center,” Valdez says. Within this dining district, residents park along the street, following sidewalks to Culinary Dropout and Mexican restaurants or stop in the AMC Theater to view the latest movies. Locals with a green thumb seek out City Floral Garden Center’s seasonal selection, including bright-colored blooms in the spring and Christmas trees in the winter. Across 14th Avenue, grocery shoppers have their choice of produce, with King Soopers and Safeway next door.

Traveling through time via Montclair’s housing
Drives down Montclair’s blocks may feel like traveling back through time and teleporting to different countries, with many housing styles and years represented across the neighborhood. Mature trees shade the sidewalks in front of Montclair’s bricked bungalows and ranch-style houses, common in the 1940s and 1980s. These homes and Spanish Colonial Revivals list between $500,000 for a two-bedroom and $800,000 for a four-bedroom, with paved driveways and attached garages. Townhouse communities provide additional housing opportunities at a lower price range, listing roughly between $250,000 for a two-bedroom and $560,000 for a renovated three-bedroom unit. Contemporary homes featuring stucco and brick exteriors list on the higher end of the spectrum, totaling over $1.4 million for new four-bedroom homes.

Getting graded through George Washington High School
Learners may study within any elementary, middle or high school in the Denver Public Schools district, even if they are not zoned for that school, as a part of Colorado’s school choice program. Students may attend Palmer Elementary School as their neighborhood school, which earns a Grade B from Niche. After finishing fifth grade, they may attend Hill Campus of Arts and Sciences, a Niche B-plus graded middle school. In ninth grade, students choose from George Washington High School’s 21 International Baccalaureate (IB) courses and nine Advanced Placement (AP) options to earn college credit. Niche gives George Washington a grade of A-minus and reports that these high school graduates show the most interest in attending the University of Colorado Boulder, Colorado State University and University of Colorado Denver. Whether going away for school or commuting into Denver, Montclair’s position puts residents within arms' reach of city attractions while being removed enough to appreciate the quieter suburban streets and craftsmanship that has carried through the years.
