Lakes, golfing and hiking
Hugging the northeast side of Derwood is Crabbs Branch Stream Valley Park. This 138-acre park is undeveloped for recreation, but locals can still check it out and enjoy nature. It sits next to the Rock Creek Regional Park, which spans 1,800 acres and includes more than 13 miles of trails for hiking, plus other amenities like a zipline area. “One thing I like about living in Derwood is its access to parks and trails,” says Alecia Scott, long-time resident and Realtor with Long & Foster. “You’ve got Lake Needwood, which is nice, with places to picnic and to rent a boat, and Lake Frank, which is smaller but close by.” Both lakes sit within Rock Creek Park, which has the public, 18-hole Needwood Golf Course. Rock Creek's Meadowside Nature Center offers free events and a Raptor Walkway--home to several hawks, owls and a bald eagle.
Derwood locals can head to the local golf course for a day of fun with friends.
