Channeling the area’s rich history, Haines Park residents are neighbors of The Iowa State Governor’s Mansion at Terrace Hill, which is located at the heart of the community. Grand, historic Tudor Revival, Victorian and Colonial Revival estate homes are often tucked among century-old trees and meandering hills. Primarily built between the late 1800s and the early 1900s, historic properties that are over 4,000 square feet may be listed between $800,000 and $1.1 million. Nearby, Greenwood Park has a rose garden and sports facilities such as a pool and an ice rink, while golf, tennis and volleyball clubs are also located in the vicinity.

Des Moines' first Italian restaurant is on Ingersoll Avenue

Area restaurants include Eatery A, which is a Mediterranean restaurant offering creative dishes such as sirloin tip kofta skewers. Since 1946, Noah’s Ark Ristorante, which is also the first Italian restaurant in the area, has been serving Des Moines residents with signature Neapolitan pizza in a laid-back atmosphere. For groceries and home essentials, head a couple of miles north to Price Chopper or Gateway Market, and retailers such as Walmart and Sam’s Club are farther to the west in Windsor Heights. For shopping trips, Valley West Mall and Merle Hay Mall are located within 7 miles of the community.
