Access to Downtown Detroit and Detroit River views
The Gold Coast neighborhood, which sits next door to the historic Manoogian Mansion District and Belle Isle, gives residents views of the Detroit River and easy access to Downtown Detroit. “We’re about 5 miles away from the heart of the city,” says Kim Meerhaege, the leasing manager for the Beach Club Detroit in Gold Coast. “It’s quieter here because we’re away from downtown, but people can rent bikes to ride down there.” Mid-rise and high-rise condo buildings surrounded by public parks fill the neighborhood. Most residents rent their condos, but some can find units to buy and settle in the area. Locals walk across the MacArthur Bridge to spend the day at Belle Isle Beach or watch the sun set over Lake St. Clair. “If you love nature, breathtaking waterfront views and a thriving atmosphere, you'll love the Gold Coast of Detroit,” says Quin Gist, a local and Realtor with DOBI Real Estate.

Belle Isle has fun and history
Belle Isle has beaches, parks, a nature center, walking trails and athletic fields for visitors to explore. “The Belle Isle Aquarium is the oldest aquarium in the country,” Meerhaeghe says. In addition to visiting the oldest aquarium, locals can take pictures near historic markers like the James Scott Memorial Fountain or Alpheus Starkey Williams Statue. Those who want to stay on the mainland while getting fresh air can walk to Owen Park, Gabriel Richard Park or Erma Henderson Park. Gabriel Richard Park also features the Detroit Riverwalk, a paved walking path that borders the park and runs along the river to Mount Elliott Park.

Condos welcome Gold Coast residents home
Condos reign in Gold Coast, particularly at properties like Beach Club Detroit, Alden Towers, Shoreline East Condominiums and River Tower Senior Apartments. A three-bedroom condo with water views can sell for around $375,000, while a one-bedroom condo in a Co-Op building can sell for $35,000 or more. The buildings were built in the 1920s and 1960s, but many condo units underwent renovations in the late 2010s. Buildings like the Alden Towers and Indian Village Manors feature controlled building access and covered parking. Despite living in condos, residents have quick access to greenspace maintained by the condo building or at one of the nearby parks.

Surf and turf at Sindbad's Restaurant and Marina
Gold Coast residents don’t have to travel far to find popular restaurants. Locals enjoy surf and turf dinners and water views at Sindbad’s Restaurant and Marina. “I like to eat at The Rattlesnake Club. Bucharest Grill also has really good shawarma. But there are plenty of great rooftop bars and speakeasies right downtown,” Meerhaeghe says. Residents who need to stock up on groceries can go across the street to Indian Village Marketplace or drive down Jefferson Avenue to Harbortown Market.
Sindbad's Restaurant is an east side favorite and is located off Jefferson Ave.

From the Garvey Academy to MLK Jr. Senior High
Parents in Gold Coast have multiple options when choosing a school for their kids. Some parents apply to enroll their kids at the Garvey Academy, which offers pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade classes and keeps African heritage at its core with extracurriculars like African Drumming. Other parents apply or join the waitlist to enroll their children at the public charter school Detroit Achievement Academy. Teens head to Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School. All three schools receive a C-minus from Niche.
