A master-planned bedroom community in eastern LA County

Once a ranch with walnut groves and grazing cattle, Diamond Bar is now a master-planned suburb of Los Angeles. The only vestige of its rural past is a historic windmill, which stands at the entrance of a strip mall. Since 1960, it's been developed into a bedroom community designed for residents to have convenient access to schools, parks and strip malls. However, Diamond Bar’s most distinguishing feature is a strong sense of community — rare for a city of over 55,000 residents. "It's a great place to raise a family," says resident and Realtor Rosa Scalio of Century 21. "I've lived here for over 30 years, and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Everybody knows their neighbors; everybody has friends in the community. People watch out for each other here." Frequent events keep everyone connected, from the city’s springtime birthday party to the Winter Snow Fest.

Community celebrations in Diamond Bar

The city of Diamond Bar celebrates about a dozen community events per year. Every April, it hosts an annual City Birthday Party, celebrating its incorporation in 1989. Attendees can expect inflatables, carnival games and live music performances. June brings a summer concert series and family-friendly outdoor movies to Summitridge Park, while the autumn features Restaurant Week. “It’s an opportunity for people to become acquainted with the restaurants here in Diamond Bar. There are discounts during the week, so people can see what they’re selling, and it helps with business exposure,” says Realtor Gilbert Rivera, who works with Marketing Specialists and has nearly three decades of experience in the area. In December, the Winter Snow Fest and Craft Fair kick off at Pantera Park — best known for a 100-ton delivery of real snow allowing for sledding and snowball fights. On the same day, there’s the Windmill Lighting Ceremony, with holiday songs and hot chocolate.

Midcentury ranch-style homes and mansions in Diamond Bar

Centered around Diamond Bar Boulevard, the city is composed of suburban subdivisions, which range from condo communities to prestigious gated neighborhoods. The most exclusive is The Country Estates, where rapper Snoop Dogg owns two homes. Located in the southeast part of Diamond Bar, The Country Estates is a 24-hour guard-gated enclave where mansions are priced around $5 million. This area has HOA fees, which go toward the community pool, clubhouse and tennis courts. Outside of this community, there are many midcentury ranch-style homes, since the city’s housing boom started in the early 1960s. Ranch-style homes often cost about $1 million, while condos can go for about $500,000. Diamond Bar’s median sales price is $980,000, with houses on the market for an average of 31 days, compared to the national average of 44 days. Interested buyers should watch this market closely. “For real estate, we have a very low inventory. People who come here stay for a long time; we say Diamond Bar homeowners are aging in place. There’s not a lot of turnover,” Rivera says. Some neighborhoods have a major heat and wildfire risk, with homes recently threatened by a 2022 brush fire. The city is prepared for evacuations if necessary.

The Summitridge Trail System, the city's largest parks and a golf course

Diamond Bar’s recreation centerpiece is the Summitridge Park Trail system — a network of hilly paths that link the city’s parks. The centrally located Steep Canyon Trail, named for the city’s Brea Canyon location, offers views of the San Gabriel Mountains, the Santa Ana Mountains and the downtown LA skyline. On the western side of the community, the Sycamore Canyon Park Trail follows a stream and is lined with cardio-boosting staircases. The path is part of a 50-acre park, the largest in Diamond Bar. In the northern part of the city, Pantera Park is the next largest park at more than 20 acres, with athletic facilities like ballfields, soccer fields and basketball courts. From the Pantera Dog Park, hikers can follow the Pantera Park Trail for panoramic overlooks of LA County. Diamond Bar Golf Course offers a clubhouse and a public 18-hole course.
