Just 11 miles east of the nation’s capital sits District Heights, Maryland, a neighborhood built on community ties with the conveniences of a suburb. “I was born and raised right near District Heights,” said Althea Hearst of Bennett Realty Solutions. “There is a lot of family in District Heights. There is a lot of community in District Heights.” Hearst goes on to mention the multitude of community events from neighborhood field days to Santa truck drops during Christmas time. While new residents are entering the area, many of the homeowners in District Heights have been there for decades.

The community is close and so are the homes with properties on adjacent lots. The streets don’t feature many sidewalks, but neighbors can let pets run free in the fenced-in lawns. There is plenty of shade from the summer sun as large trees are in most lots and the annual rainfall keeps the neighborhood green and lush. A median single-family home runs about $360,000. “It’s about 50/50 between single-family ranch-style homes and townhouses”, said Hearst. “You are looking at street parking for the most part. If you are lucky, you may find a driveway, but most of the homes do have yards.” Brick homes line the streets with hipped roof ranches, many featuring a basement.

Part of the Prince George’s County School District, District Heights features exciting opportunities for students of all ages. Learners may begin at Francis Scott Key Elementary where they can enter the county’s AlphaBEST before-and after-school program studying everything from art and drama to coding and robotics. Next up may be athletics powerhouse Walker Mill Middle School. The Panthers regularly take home basketball division championships. Suitland High School has offered a four-year visual and performing arts program since 1986. Each year students earn millions of dollars in scholarship awards and are prepared to take the next step in their careers in the arts. Jabez Christian Academy, Mount Calvary Catholic, and Bishop McNamara are all private school options in the neighborhood.

Residents can gather their family and escape into nature with the help of the 454 acres of Walker Mill Regional Park. The keystone of the park is the Woodland Wonderland playground which features faux wooden equipment, slides, swings and a floor piano that plays real music. Perfect for group outings, the park houses picnic tables and reservations are available for picnic shelters. Take a walk into the woods on one of the trails, utilize the tennis courts or find your adventure at the skate park.

While the park offers a nice getaway, one of the perks of District Heights is its proximity to all the essentials synonymous with life in the suburbs. Grocery shoppers can head to Lidl or Aldi to pick up produce, meats and goods for the whole family. There are plenty of options for those with a sweet tooth as District Heights is home to an array of bakeries like Queen Cheesecake and Sweet Courtney’s Confections. Looking to take a night off cooking? Check no further than LuvPlates. Started in 2016 as a food truck, LuvPlates is now a brick-and-mortar offering fall-off-the-bone ribs, jerk wings, and their famous mac & cheese.

Convenient food is matched by a nice selection of retail shops in the District Heights neighborhood. Target is the easy spot for picking up school supplies, electronics or home goods. Target is the cornerstone of the Centre at Forestville Mall a 463,000 square foot retail space. For even more options, locals hop on I-695 West and head 11 miles to Washington D.C. However, with the community draws of District Heights, you will never want to stray too far away.
