Local eats and chain restaurants around Edgehill
The Edgehill neighborhood sits conveniently between two major shopping centers, and their proximity gives residents the added benefit of running errands on foot or on a bike. “This commercial corridor has taken on an evolution where it’s mostly all chain restaurants,” Stonesifer says. “But there are still a few mom-and-pops.” Centrally located in Edgehill, between the two shopping areas, Dover Hollywood Diner is a popular spot that serves American fare from morning to night. “On Division Street, there’s a little shop called Mommom’s Ice Cream. It’s the best ice cream in town,” Stonesifer says. “And attached to it is Little Grocer, a great mom-and-pop hidden little gem of a sandwich shop.” On the north side, a commercial section features a Kohl’s department store, fast-food and takeout eateries, banks, salons and chain restaurants. On the south side, Edgehill Shopping Center is another retail area with storefronts and salons, including a local favorite for a trim, The Upper Cut. Nearby there’s a Target, a Safeway grocer and several chain diners. Next to the Safeway is the Islamic Society of Central Delaware, a non-profit organization that serves Muslim families in Dover and the surrounding areas.Quaint, established ranch styles and bungalows
Edgehill’s residential roads are generally kept quiet thanks to most homes featuring driveways, and many of the property’s small front lawns are shaded by mature maple and beech trees. Common house styles include ranch homes and bungalows built in the 1950s and ‘60s, with the occasional Cape Cod and Colonial-inspired dwelling. Single-family home sizes typically stay between 1,000 and 1,500 square feet, and prices can range from $150,000 to about $350,000, although Stonesifer says that a home for more than $275,000 is an outlier in this community. “This area is attracting start-up buyers with a smaller household size,” he says. “It’s also attracting those embarking on a real estate portfolio, as the prices are low enough to go in and flip the homes and have an investment that pays you back.” It’s no surprise that about half of the residents in this suburb own their properties, while the other half rent. On Spruance Road, there are traditional townhomes and duplexes with front-facing saltbox roofs with 1,000-square-foot units that cost around $135,000 to $155,000. Located near U.S. Route 13, which serves as the commercial corridor around Edgehill, properties might be more susceptible to larceny and burglary. According to CAP Index, this neighborhood receives a crime score of 6, in comparison to the national average of 4.Walks to Dover Park and Silver Lake Park
Residents of Edgehill are also within walking distance of two significant green spaces in Dover. “On the east side of town, there’s Dover Park, which is undergoing some major renovations that we’re hoping to close by the end of the summer of 2024,” says Carolyn Courtney with the City of Dover Parks and Recreation. “We’re building a small spray pad and a handicap-accessible playground, and there will also be a small building where the community can meet and hold baby showers and things like that.” More park facilities alongside these additions include tennis and pickleball courts, softball fields and other athletic areas. To the west of the neighborhood, just across U.S. Route 13, Silver Lake Park is one of the largest parks in the city with more than 184 acres of walking trails and fields alongside Silver Lake and the St. Jones River. “We don’t allow swimming in Silver Lake, but we do allow fishing and boating for motorboats up to 18 feet long with a max horsepower of 115,” Courtney says. “You need a City of Dover ramp permit to use the boating ramp, but the price is meant to be user-friendly.” She also mentions the highly-anticipated Mayors Regatta that takes place at Silver Lake Park in the fall, where the community can sign up to race canoes, kayaks or inflatables around the lake. “We bring in an environmental scientist to educate everyone on how environmental things affect the lake, like stormwater,” Courtney adds. The park also offers a sand volleyball court and areas for family or company picnics.Convenience to U.S. Route 13 and Delaware Route 1
The commuter-friendly Edgehill neighborhood is cradled between U.S. Route 13 and Delaware Route 1, which run north to south through the entire state of Delaware. The Delaware Authority for Regional Transit, or DART, services the community. Courtney also mentions that Wilmington Airport, about 45 minutes north, is the nearest regional airport with domestic flights through Avelo Air and American Airlines.First State history around The Green
A mile southwest of Edgehill, Downtown Dover has a major historic presence. The Green, a national park, sits in the center of a town square area where Colonial-era buildings and museums emphasize the city’s historical significance. “The Green is where the Constitution was signed, and Delaware became the first state," Stonesifer says. This green space hosts Dover Days in May, when the Dover community comes out in 1700s garb and celebrates their heritage through music, food and fireworks. “There’s a major revitalization movement in the downtown area that will bring more residents to Downtown Dover,” Stonesifer adds. “It will have a big effect on businesses around The Green.”International opportunities at Dover High School
Students can begin their public school education at East Dover Elementary, a kindergarten through fourth-grade school, before attending fifth and sixth grade at William Henry Middle and seventh and eighth grade at Central Middle, all of which receive a C-plus grade from Niche. Dover High School, graded a B-plus, offers students a pathway to become a certified nursing assistant, pending completion of the Delaware CNA Certification Test at the end of the course. The high school’s Japanese Club works closely with Dover High’s sister school in Kakuda, Japan, hosting Kakuda High students in March and sending Dover High students to Japan in June.
