Fishing village south of Houma
Dulac derives from the French “du lac,” meaning “of the lake,.” and It’s hard to imagine a more appropriate name for this South Louisiana fishing village speckled with ponds and small lakes. Bayous and streams crisscross the marshland 15 miles south of Houma. making it a prime fishing spot. Dulac shares a vibe with Cocodrie, another coastal village even farther south and closer to the Gulf, but while Cocodrie is primarily a vacation destination, Dulac is anchored more firmly to year-round living. “Cocodrie has evolved over the years to have a lot of second homes and fishing camps,” says Christopher Pulaski, director of planning and zoning for Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government. “Dulac certainly has some of that, but also a lot of permanent residents. There are a lot of close family ties in the bayou communities.” The Dulac Community Center is a hub of activity, hosting women’s and children’s book clubs, back-to-school supply drives and summer block parties.
Dulac is quite rural even by coastal Louisiana standards.
Fishing is a popular pastime in this water bound community.

Stilt houses with water frontage
Stilt houses rise alongside the bayou, many offering water views and frontage. Most inventory dates to the early 2000s, with a few older builds mixed in. Fixer-uppers and small vacant lots might cost $25,000 to $125,000, while modest-sized homes might sell for $150,000 to $400,000. The private gated Southern Comfort Waterfront Community features larger stilt houses with decks and boathouses, typically in the $400,000 to $600,000 range. Homes in this area tend to stay on the market for over 100 days, well above the national average of 44. The CAP Index score for Dulac is 2 out of 10, lower than the national average one of 4.

Gumbo at Ceana’s Cajun Cookin’
Many local restaurants operate out of rustic roadside shacks wedged between Grand Caillou Road and the bayou. At Ceana’s Cajun Cookin’, a 15-foot alligator sculpture named Gumbo winks at diners as they chow down on po’boys, fried chicken and crawfish boudin at waterside tables. Local favorite Schmoopys dishes up gumbo, shrimp and grits and platters of fried oysters from a stilt house with a wide wooden deck. Also on Grand Caillou Road, markets like Hi Seas of Dulac and David Chauvin’s Seafood Company stock local products for home chefs, and Bayou Hardware sells coolers and lawn-care equipment. The nearest grocery store is Ashland Mini Mart, about 9 miles north.
Schmoopys has seafood served Cajun style, and some of the best fried shrimp in town.

Dulac Boat Blessing

Things to consider
Coastal erosion is steadily chipping away at communities like Dulac. Since 1932, over 1,900 square miles of Louisiana’s coastline have slipped beneath the sea. Climate change is also heating the Gulf Coast waters, leading to more frequent and powerful hurricanes. The risk of flooding and wind damage is exceptionally high, as when Hurricane Ida thrashed Dulac in 2021.
