Fun in the community gardens and on Lake Superior
Locals have a distinct advantage over their neighbors across the John A. Blatnik Bridge. “Superior has access to the water, but there’s just a lot more accessibility to the water in Duluth,” says Hansmeyer. “You have the lake walk, which is several miles long.” Walking the edge of Lake Superior eventually reveals Leif Erikson Park, known for its small, open-air stage with its back to the water. Portland Square Park is centrally located, offering a playground, walking paths and a pup-welcoming policy. For something sportier, folks head to Grant Park. This green space is just large enough to fit a football field and basketball court. Community gardens are between these two parks and throughout the rest of the area, a popular pastime for those with and without green thumbs. The Duluth Community Garden Program manages 21 community gardens across greater Duluth, most measuring 400 square feet. Those who’d rather admire flora than plant their own can drive to the Duluth Rose Garden. Home to more than 3,000 rose bushes and several winding paths, the garden is a free, relaxing way to spend a spring or summer afternoon.Casual, locally owned spots around East Hillside
A couple of casual spots are available to locals for a quick bite. First, there’s Toppers Pizza, a joint that proudly serves fresh-baked pizzas made with locally sourced mozzarella. The aptly named Burrito Union is where locals go to get Mexican food in an industrial, dimly lit setting. Some enjoy a craft beer on tap from the local brewery, Fitger’s Brewhouse. If locals want to enjoy a sour, stout or anything in between, there’s always room at Fitger’s Barrel Room. Patrons relax in the casual bar setting with fresh pizzas and brews while watching live acts on the small stage. At the neighborhood’s south end, there’s the Whole Foods Co-Op, which offers the usual necessities in addition to advertising ways to save and get groceries delivered.Bungalows and traditional-style homes hailing from another century
Most of East Hillside’s landscape comprises gridded residential streets surrounding Grant Park. Light gray streets -- paved in concrete for better winter durability -- blend neatly into narrow sidewalks. Few homes have individual driveways, so street parking is essential. Evenly spaced lots measuring less than a quarter of an acre display bungalows and traditional-style homes built during the early 20th century. The National Register of Historic Places designates some of these homes as historic buildings, a factor reflected in their architecture. “It’s an older part of Duluth, as in pre-World War II,” says Hansmeyer, “so you get the character with things like the hardwood floors, but you also get older plumbing and electrical.” Most of these homes average between $150,000 and $300,000.Catching the bus into Downtown Duluth
The Duluth Transit Authority serves East Hillside, offering bus routes along Superior Street. Folks can board the bus at the intersection of 4th Street and 12th Avenue and make the two-mile commute into Downtown Duluth in 11 minutes. Reaching the airport via public transit is doable, but the ten-mile trip takes just shy of an hour. Driving to the airport takes only 14 minutes.Winter weather concerns
Duluth is one of the coldest spots in the continental United States, with January average temperatures between 4 and 20 degrees, and below-zero readings are common. More than 80 inches of snow a year is considered normal.K-12 at Duluth Public Schools
Students in East Hillside can attend class within the Duluth Public School District, rated B overall by Niche. They begin at Congdon Elementary, which earns an A-minus. They then move to Ordean East Middle, which gets a B-plus. East High rounds out the list with another B-plus, and offers technical, trades-based college credit courses, and its extracurriculars (such as hockey and curling) are equally unique.
