Established homes along Lake Superior

Like other nearby suburbs along Duluth’s waterfront, Endion shares a blend of lakeside life and city conveniences, such as eclectic shops, cafes and easy access to the water. The main difference, though, are the properties found largely in the neighborhood's northeastern side. Once home to industrialists who fueled Duluth's growth as a critical port at the turn of the 20th century, Endion -- and adjacent Congdon Park -- today still feature a collection of stately properties from another era. “The colonial mansions are always a favorite,” says Realtor Benjamin Funke of Re/Max Results. Other portions of the neighborhood are more conventional, home to residents who enjoy living blocks from Lake Superior.

A blend of straightforward cottages and lofty mansions

The combination of port facilities and railroad terminals made Duluth one of the fastest growing cites in America in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Workers streamed in, as did industry magnates. With them, single-family developments ranging from the modest to the extravagant sprung up. Along the neatly wooded streets, buyers will find cottages and bungalows with refurbished facades originally built in the late 1800s to early 1900s. These range in price between $150,000 and $330,000. Larger homes in a variety of styles sell from $470,000 to more than $1 million. The largest and most ornate are typically found around 25th and 26th avenues.

Getting outside to enjoy Lake Superior

Endion Park is one of the neighborhood's only green spaces. Situated on First Street, it features a playground for kids to explore as well as adjoining basketball and tennis courts. Lake Walk, a flat trek following the shoreline, offers excellent views of the water and is easily accessible via 21st Street, which ducks beneath Interstate 35. “People do swim, but not frequently,” says Realtor Kevin Rappana of Re/Max Results. “The water is pretty cold. Most people hang out at the beach.” Once on the Lake Walk, there’s the option to follow it south to Leif Erikson Park. This spot on the shore hosts movies in the park and small concerts, weather permitting. Alternatively, there’s The Duluth Rose Garden, home to gazebos and benches to relax while admiring the rose bushes or Lake Superior.

Locally owned restaurants close to Lake Superior

Endion has a few locally owned gems for dining out. One is At Sara’s Table, which serves classic diner breakfasts and, later in the day, desserts, wines and cocktails. Quicker bites can be found at one of the chain restaurants along 21st Avenue, closer to the water. On this side of town, there’s Black Woods Grill and Bar, an upscale sit-down establishment known for its savory surf and turf served in a modern yet rustic environment. And, of course, locals don’t miss their morning boost from Caribou Coffee or Dunn Brothers Coffee. Super One Foods has the weekly grocery basics.

A quick hop into Downtown Duluth

As with other neighborhoods along Lake Superior, the Duluth Transit Authority serves the area. Although First Street scores Endion a 67 out of 100 for its noise level, it’s comparable to most suburbs in greater Duluth. “I would say it’s a little bit quieter than downtown; you just don’t have the same traffic,” says Rappana. Folks can board the bus at Endion Park and be downtown in just 14 minutes. The 3-mile stretch takes about seven minutes if commuting by car. Commuting by bus into Superior is also technically doable, with the ten-mile trip lasting about 50 minutes. Duluth International Airport can be reached in just over an hour by bus in the opposite direction.
