From industry to retail, with peaceful residential streets

Uphill from Saint Louis Bay is one of Duluth’s longest-standing neighborhoods. Lincoln Park has evolved from an industrial district to a retail destination, with shops, restaurants and event centers close to quiet residential streets. “Despite its long history, Lincoln Park is an up-and-coming neighborhood today,” says Brok Hansmeyer, a real estate agent with RE/MAX Results in Duluth. “There’s lots to do without getting in a car, especially with the recent push to expand the Lincoln Park Craft District, adding breweries, restaurants and shops to the area.”

Mike Raivala, a REMAX real estate agent who has worked in the Duluth and Superior areas for 21 years, says that Lincoln Park has some of the city’s most unexpected homes. “Downtown Duluth has small little neighborhoods that were established and named a century ago,” he said. “The older houses have quirky details and features. Since they were crafted individually instead of as a development, each house is slightly different.”

Houses celebrate their 125th birthdays

Set on tree-lined streets ascending the western hills, Lincoln Park houses are primarily in the Craftsman and four-square styles. According to Hansmeyer, most of the houses are between 100 and 125 years old, with basements lined with locally-mined bluestone, hardwood floors and ornate woodwork details carved into banisters and cornices. “These are classic Duluth homes,” says Hansmeyer, “and they have a rustic charm.”

Houses range in price from $150,000 to $300,000, depending on size and condition. “It’s more affordable to buy here than in similar downtown neighborhoods,” says Hansmeyer. “Plus, walking to parks, restaurants and stores right from your front steps saves even more money by avoiding long driven commutes.”

Discover the Great Lakes' ecology at parks, museums and markets

The neighborhood’s namesake, Lincoln Park, was established over 100 years ago, and in 1908, Duluth’s first-ever public playground was added. Lincoln Park has about a mile and a half of walking trails that meander alongside Miller Creek, passing historical landmarks such as Elephant Rock, a huge, sloping boulder that local kids enjoy sledding down on snowy days. Just past the park’s entrance, the recently renamed and renovated Renee Van Nett Pavilion honors the eponymous late city councilor, who was the first-ever Native American woman elected to the Duluth City Council. The stone-sided pavilion dates to the 1890s and now includes a multi-use sports court, improved signage and accessible restrooms. An 18-hole disc golf course winds through the woods, rounding out the park’s recreation options.

To the southwest, Wheeler Athletic Complex adds to the outdoor-recreation options, with softball and baseball fields, tennis courts, a bocce ball court, picnic areas and a seasonal outdoor skating rink. Closer to the water, Harrison Park has a baseball field, community garden, basketball court, playground and pavilion with seating and restrooms. On Thursdays from June through September, the Lincoln Park Farmers Market is held at Harrison Park from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Not just a spot to buy local produce, the market also hosts live music and a variety of hands-on activities, including salsa-making classes and culinary demonstrations. The Duluth Children’s Museum on West Superior Street mixes education with play, offering rock climbing, flight simulations and STEM stations. Children climb into replica canoes during the museum’s daily workshops to learn how the Ojibwe people, an indigenous American tribe native to the region, harvested manoomin, a type of wild rice, from the St. Louis River Estuary.

Explore the Lincoln Park Craft District

According to Hansmeyer, West Superior Street, formerly full of industrial warehouses, is now a commercial hub. “The Lincoln Park Craft District is growing into a new, cool area, with breweries, restaurants and all sorts of artsy shops,” he said. “People living here can go out to dinner or play trivia at one of the breweries or cideries before heading home, all without getting in a car.”

Between Duluth Cider, Wild State Cider, Ursa Minor Brewing and Bent Paddle Brewing Co., there are plenty of beverages to try. Curly’s Bar offers a relaxed spot to sing karaoke or play pool, and Corktown Eatery & Bar serves sandwiches, burgers and salads with house-made bundt cakes for dessert. After its grand opening in 2023, River City Records & Books brought vinyl back to Duluth after the city’s last record shop closed two years earlier. The shop aims to support Duluth’s music scene by promoting local music on its social media channels and selling their albums in-store. Home cooks can head to the closest grocery store, a Whole Foods Co-op in Denfeld, the neighborhood bordering Lincoln Park to the southwest.

Duluth Transit Authority

The Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) provides bus service throughout the city. Buses loop through Lincoln Park, with stops along Grand Avenue, West 3rd Street, North 24th Avenue and Cody Street. The bus routes don’t often venture through the gridded residential streets, but no Lincoln Park home is farther than a mile from a bus stop. According to Raivala, locals are attuned to the city’s event schedule and use it to plan their trips around town. “We don’t usually have traffic, but locals know not to drive downtown during marathon mornings!” Raivala says.
