Convenient enclave outside D.C.

Just south of Tyson’s Corner, with its own Metro Station and the Washington and Old Dominion Trail running through it, Dunn Loring is perhaps one of the most convenient communities in NOVA. “It’s this little enclave sandwiched between Vienna and Falls Church in a hip shopping area,” says Heather Reis-Platter, Realtor at KW United Falls Church and resident of Dunn Loring for 25 years. Her advice to people considering moving to the area? “Don’t forget about it!” This tucked-away community might be small, but its highly rated schools, diversity of housing styles and vicinity to Washington, DC make it worth considering.

Shopping at Tyson’s Corner and dining at Mosaic

Tyson’s Corner, a sprawling shopping complex, is just outside Dunn Loring. Here, residents can pick up groceries at Whole Foods or Lidl, peruse high-end goods at Louis Vuitton and Chanel, pop between shops like Gap and Barnes & Noble, or catch a movie at AMC Tysons Corner 16. “Everyone in NOVA is going to Tyson’s Corner. It’s a huge area,” Reis-Platter says. Just south of Dunn Loring, the Mosaic District has more shopping and dining options, including Our Mom Eugenia, an authentic Greek restaurant decorated with pops of blue, and B Side, a hip modern spot serving charcuterie and cocktails.

Ranches and split-levels to Colonials and contemporary

Home styles in Dunn Loring range from ranch and split-levels built in the 1950s and '60s to brick Colonial Revival and contemporary homes built between the 1980s and 2000s filling out the area’s larger lots. Homes typically start at $1 million and range to $2 million, though some brick townhomes along Cedar Lane and Electric Avenue range from $850,000 to $900,000. “The newer homes are all unique. You’re seeing more Craftsman and farmhouse styles, and independent builders are putting them in,” Reis-Platter says.
