Historic DuPont neighborhood next to military base

DuPont’s Historic Village sits about 17 miles south of Tacoma and is known for its regional history and close ties to the defense industry. “It’s DuPont's smaller, original part, and I’ve always loved it here. It’s just small-town America with access to bigger cities like Tacoma and Olympia,” says Dawn Smith, managing broker and owner of Home Team DuPont, who has over 20 years of real estate experience and resident. The neighborhood was originally built in 1909 by DuPont PowderWorks to house its workers of the nearby dynamite plant. Streets were named after prominent company managers and plant sites, and housing sizes correlated with an employee’s position. DuPont sold the homes in the 1950s and the plant closed in the 1970s. Since then, Historic Village has attracted many military families who want to live close to U.S. Military Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The Army and Air Force base was built in the 1910s and operates as a training and mobilization center. Jets can be heard flying overhead from every corner of the neighborhood.

Single-family homes from the 1910s and 1970s

Homes in Historic Village are lined along gridded streets with alleyway access and trees surrounding sidewalks. Traditional bungalows built in 1913 are the main housing type, with triangular roofs, a porch and dormer windows. These houses span 1,200 to 1,500 square feet and are priced around $375,000 to $525,000. Bi-levels and split levels built in the 1970s go for similar prices along Haskell Street. A handful of traditional multi-story homes with farmhouse architecture in the neighborhood cost $525,000 to $750,000. These were often houses of managers and executives for DuPont PowderWorks. “Most houses here date back to the 1910s,” Smith says. “There are some properties in Historic Village that don’t fall under DuPont’s master homeowners association, but most do.” Nearly half of the neighborhood rents homes to military families. The CAP Index crime score in Historic Village is 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

DuPont parks, green spaces and trails

Sellers Park, called 'Village Park' by locals, has a playground, basketball court and turf field. Small walking paths connect to the larger DuPont Trail System, which winds throughout the city. Ethel Lumsdon Park and Iafrati Park both have large open fields and picnic areas. There’s also Robinson Park, which sits next to the DuPont Historical Museum and displays a historic dynamite train. Walking paths cut through the landscaped gardens, and there’s a gazebo for lounging. About 4 miles north is The Home Course, an 18-hole golf course. Puget Sound’s Nisqually Reach is close to Historic Village, popular for boating and fishing. DuPont Wharf is an isolated beach on the water that can be reached by hiking the Sequalitchew Creek Trail from the neighborhood. The Nisqually Reach Nature Center is about 10 miles southwest.
