Durango West
Neighborhood in Durango, Colorado
La Plata County 81301, 81303
Craftsman, tri-level and ranches from the 1970s-90s
Durango West offers a little bit of everything, with home styles ranging from ranchers to modern mountain Craftsman to tri-level builds. Prices range from $450,000 to $$750,000 for 20th century builds, while some large homes with acreage can be up to $1.6 million. “The price point is at a spot where you get more bang for your buck than most parts of town,” says Meininger. “It’s also a lot of primary homeowners compared to some parts of Durango.” Homes are spread out and feature front and backyards where wildlife may make itself at home. Many houses feature multicar garages and private driveways. There are no sidewalks in the neighborhood, but the quiet roads are shaded by mature pine trees. The pines, along with Durango’s dry summers, make wildfire insurance a necessity.Fun at Lake Nighthorse and Hesperus Ski Area
Residents can go to Durango West Playground, the only park in the neighborhood. It features a playground and a grassy area for open play. Lake Nighthorse sits 11 miles southeast of the neighborhood and is a popular spot in the summer. The man-made lake opened in 2018 and offers nearly 1,500 acres of recreation, including fishing, boating and swimming. During the winter, residents head five miles up Route 160 to the Hesperus Ski Area. Hesperus features 26 ski runs with beginner, intermediate and expert levels. Skiers and snowboarders can rent gear at the mountain.Durango High passes the test
Kids in the neighborhood go to Durango School District 9-R, beginning at Park Elementary School. Park holds a B-plus grade on Niche and is ranked as the top public elementary school in La Plata County. Next, kids go to the B-rated Escalante Middle School. Teens attend Durango High School, which has an A-minus grade. It’s about 9 miles from Durango West to Durango High School, but the school has bus routes all throughout La Plata County. Durango High students can join the mountain biking or alpine skiing teams.Close to Route 160
Durango West does not feature any public transportation, so a car is necessary. The neighborhood is intersected by Route 160, which provides quick access to Durango in 9 miles, which is usually under 20 minutes of driving time in normal conditions. In addition, 160 links with Route 550 running north to ski towns like Purgatory and Pagosa Springs. The Durango-La Plata Airport is about 20 miles away and has flights to Denver, Dallas and Phoenix.Dining at Kennebec Cafe
Durango West is strictly residential, and the closest restaurant is the Kennebec Café, 4 miles west of the neighborhood on Route 160. In the style of a European café with intimate seating and local art-filled walls, the reservations-only restaurant serves meat and seafood, house-made pasta and signature desserts. Courtyard seating is available in the summer. For more dining options, locals take Route 160 9 miles into downtown Durango. Main Avenue is Durango’s food epicenter, with upscale American, Italian and Asian options. While downtown, residents can stop into Albertsons for groceries. “A lot of people don’t just commute for a night out or groceries, but also for work,” says Meininger.
