High above the Animas River Valley, Hillcrest is a neighborhood of newer, early 2000s homes in the La Plata Mountains. “The way the homes are situated and the elevation, gives Hillcrest an extra half-hour or so of sunlight each day than the rest of Durango,” says Anne Zalbowitz of Keller Williams Realty, who has over two decades of experience in Durango. “Most backyards face the sunset and it’s great for having dinner outside during the summer.” The neighborhood borders Hillcrest Golf Club, the only public course in Durango. Hillcrest is tucked away in the mountains, but it’s also 2 miles away from downtown attractions.

New Craftsman and modern-mountain homes
Homes in Hillcrest sit on large lots, usually half an acre, with rolling backyards and feature attached garages and long driveways. The quiet residential roads end in cul-de-sacs and are lined by wide sidewalks, making for an easy but potentially hilly walk to the golf course. “Styles really vary,” says Zalbowitz. “You see modern-mountain homes, Spanish architecture and large Craftsman builds on the same road.” The homes have a large footprint with a median lot size of over 13,000 square feet, and prices range from $800,000 to $1.4 million. Many of these houses were built in the early 2000s, making them some of the newer builds in Durango compared to mid-century builds downtown. Residents will likely see wildlife, such as deer grazing in their backyards. Fire insurance is necessary due to Durango’s dry climate and plentiful pines.
Two story, Mountain Modern style homes are common on the northern side of Hillcrest.

The nearby Smith Sports Complex has four tennis courts and soccer fields that got new turf in 2024. Live music fans head to Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, less than a mile away from most homes, for choirs, orchestras and rock shows. “It’s a great venue and there’s a ton of variety,” says Zalbowitz. “We’ll get the Nutcracker in December, but also Led Zeppelin cover bands and local singer-songwriters.”
