New Craftsman and modern-mountain homes
Homes in Hillcrest sit on large lots, usually half an acre, with rolling backyards and feature attached garages and long driveways. The quiet residential roads end in cul-de-sacs and are lined by wide sidewalks, making for an easy but potentially hilly walk to the golf course. “Styles really vary,” says Zalbowitz. “You see modern-mountain homes, Spanish architecture and large Craftsman builds on the same road.” The homes have a large footprint with a median lot size of over 13,000 square feet, and prices range from $800,000 to $1.4 million. Many of these houses were built in the early 2000s, making them some of the newer builds in Durango compared to mid-century builds downtown. Residents will likely see wildlife, such as deer grazing in their backyards. Fire insurance is necessary due to Durango’s dry climate and plentiful pines.Dining at Jean Pierre and Seasons of Durango
While there are no restaurants in Hillcrest, residents have some of the best dining options in Durango 2-miles away on Main Avenue. Locals can pop into Jean Pierre Bakery & Wine Bar, a French-inspired spot open for breakfast and lunch. The menu features sweet and savory crepes, and the décor features a grand piano and chandeliers. Seasons of Durango has an ever-changing menu of American bistro classics. Diners can sit on the patio or enjoy the white tablecloth dining at the mahogany tables inside. Carver Brewing Company is the town’s oldest brewery, known for its Jackrabbit Pale Ale, which also serves bar favorites like loaded fries, burgers and soft pretzels. Main Avenue is also the retail epicenter of Durango. Sticks & Stones is a shop specializing in homemade jewelry and pottery, while The Sparrow is an upscale women’s clothing boutique.Hitting the links at Hillcrest Golf Club
Hillcrest Golf Club, an 18-hole Par 71 course is located just across the street from many of the neighborhood’s homes. Hillcrest offers a full driving range, pro shop and lessons for all ages. Right next to the club is Chapman Hill Ice Rink and Ski Area. This one-run ski mountain is packed throughout the winter, while the ice rink hosts local hockey teams and figure skaters. Kids can explore the playground equipment at Hillcrest Park, while parents set up a picnic on the park’s grassy areas. The nearby Smith Sports Complex has four tennis courts and soccer fields that got new turf in 2024. Live music fans head to Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, less than a mile away from most homes, for choirs, orchestras and rock shows. “It’s a great venue and there’s a ton of variety,” says Zalbowitz. “We’ll get the Nutcracker in December, but also Led Zeppelin cover bands and local singer-songwriters.”Access to Durango-La Plata Airport
There’s no public transportation in Hillcrest, so a car is necessary. Residents are close to Route 550, which provides quick access to Silverton, about 50 miles north. The Durango-La Plata Airport is 25 miles away and has daily flights to Phoenix, Denver and Dallas.Durango High has Olympic pedigree
Kids in the area head to Durango School District No. 9-R, beginning at Park Elementary School. Park holds a B-plus Niche rating and was named the top public elementary school in La Plata County. Next is the B-rated Escalante Middle School. Durango High School has an A-minus rating and is known for its mountain biking program. Three athletes representing the United States in mountain biking at the 2024 Summer Olympics are Durango High alumni. “We’re extremely proud of our athletes here,” says Zalbowitz. “In Durango, it’s not really where you live or where you go to school. It’s about what sport you play and what your ranking is.” Durango has produced at least one athlete at every Summer Olympics since 1996.
