Durham is a small town in Androscoggin County characterized by green farmland, pine forests, and spacious lots. Martha Hiat, an associate broker with Brett Davis Real Estate with eXP Realty, says the area began gaining more attention in 2020 as homebuyers prioritized space. “It’s a rural community that’s well-connected to Freeport, which has the shops and events,” Hiat adds. Though the secluded feel of the town is its main appeal, residents are under 10 miles away from the outlet shops and seafood restaurants in Freeport or the small Main Street in Lisbon Falls. The school district also draws notice, as children are zoned to Regional School Unit No. 05, which receives an A-minus rating from Niche. Though residents enjoy a peaceful, rural setting, they have convenient access to popular resources in south-central Maine. The solitude also plays a part in the area's low crime score; Durham has the lowest possible CAP Index Crime score of 1 out of 10.

Colonial Revivals and New Traditional homes on an acre of land
Drivers along Durham's country roads will mainly pass farmhouses and classic New England homes with multiple acres of land, though more suburban pockets have been cropping up. “There’s a lot of farmland, but newer developments are trending toward subdivisions,” Hiat says. “Most houses have at least an acre, so you might see other houses when you’re in a subdivision, but you’re not going to be right next to your neighbors.” Colonials and capes from the early 1900s are priced between $200,000 and $500,000, depending on condition. Most homes are Colonial Revivals and Cape Cods from the late 1900s, but there are some freshly built New Traditional homes as well. Prices for these fluctuate between $450,000 and $600,000.

Freeport High School Side Street
Durham students attend well-rated schools
Children may begin at Durham Community School, which serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade and earns an A rating from Niche. Freeport High School, which serves older students, scores a B-plus rating. The district offers career and technical courses through Region 10 Technical High School; students may enroll in programs to study culinary arts, creative digital media and early childhood education.

While locals can stop by markets like the one at Replenova Farm to grab fair-trade coffee, fresh eggs, organic produce and grab-and-go sandwiches, they won’t find restaurants or stores in Durham. Lisbon Falls’ Main Street, which sits to the north of Durham, on the opposite side of the Androscoggin River, has a few popular dining spots. Frank’s Restaurant and Pub, named to honor the man credited with popularizing Moxie soda in the area, serves American fare like wings, burgers and loaded fries. Flux Restaurant and Bar is a more elevated eatery where patrons can order cocktails, wedge salads and oysters. In the morning, locals can sip on a latte from Little River Coffee Company or grab a locally brewed IPA from Olive Pit Brewing Company in the evening. Regional supermarket Food City is also in Lisbon Falls, but Freeport has many more shopping options. Downtown Freeport is known for the Freeport Village Station outlet mall, which has popular cafés and seafood restaurants, along with retail stores like Old Navy, Coach, Sketchers and Talbots. The outdoor mall also hosts L.L. Bean’s flagship campus.

Community events in Lisbon Falls and Freeport
Durham doesn’t usually host events aside from the annual town meeting. However, residents often attend seasonal activities and festivals in the nearby towns of Lisbon Falls and Freeport. “The Moxie Festival in Lisbon Falls is one of the things drawing attention to the area. Some people come from across the country to see it,” Hiat says. The July festival is a weekend-long ode to Maine’s official soft drink, a gentian-root-flavored soda that might not be widely enjoyed but does inspire regional pride. Attendees wear bright orange shirts inspired by the fluorescent cans and gather for a parade, live music and fireworks display.
Outdoor apparel company L.L. Bean was founded in Freeport, and its flagship campus has a large presence in the town. During the summer, locals can head to L.L. Bean’s Discovery Park for free morning yoga sessions, tote bag painting and kids’ story times; there are also free concerts at the park throughout the summer. In mid-November, the company’s Northern Lights event marks the beginning of the winter season with ongoing seasonal fixtures like pictures with Santa, free hot cocoa and holiday lighting displays.
Commuters use Interstate 295 to go to Portland or Augusta
Residents rely on cars to get around Durham; state routes course through the area, connecting the small town to the larger ones nearby. The twin cities of Lewiston and Auburn are a 14-mile drive northwest, and Freeport and Brunswick are both about 8 miles southeast. “Because Durham feels more secluded, people think they’ll have a further drive into Portland, but it’s not a rural commute,” Hiat says. “You’ll be driving about the same amount as you would if you lived in a village like Freeport.” Commuters headed to Portland have a 24-mile drive south on Interstate 295, while those headed to the state capital of Augusta must drive 38 miles north on the state highway. Locals don’t have to travel very far for some services, as the Mid Coast Hospital is in Brunswick, but the nearest airport is the Portland International Jetport, located 30 miles away.
