Schenectady’s best-kept secret
East Glenville is one of several hamlets in the Town of Glenville. The community spans the banks of the Mohawk River across from Schenectady, one of the four cities that make up the Capital Region. "East Glenville is a charming suburban town with convenience to all the excitement that surrounds us," says Brenda Mayette, a Realtor with Miranda Real Estate Group, Inc. and Glenville native. "We're pretty much 20 minutes from everything." With its central location, major employers range from General Electric and GlobalFoundries to the New York State government. Other leading industries include healthcare, social assistance and education. "I had a buyer once who had no interest in the area and then changed his mind after touring it," Mayette says. "You hear about Clifton Park and the Guilderland, but you don't hear much about Glenville. It's like the Capital Region's best-kept secret."

Patriotism in the air
The Schenectady County Airport, the Empire State Aerosciences Museum and adjacent Stratton Air National Guard Base anchor the community. While the noise may seem like a deterrent for some buyers, "It's something that you easily get used to, but not something that you have to get used to," Mayette says, referring to the strict flight schedule. "You know when they have their bomber practice on Tuesday nights, and it's the coolest thing. I feel very patriotic when I see them, and if you learn more about their contribution to society, it makes the noise tolerable." The base is home to the 109th Airlift Wing, whose unit flies LC-130s, or "Skibirds," some of the only planes that can land on snow. Because of that unique quality, the unit is utilized by the National Science Foundation-led United States Antarctic Program.

20th and 21st century homes
In East Glenville, suburban tree-lined streets give way to 20th- and 21st-century houses. Quiet roadways with little traffic let families and children freely stroll around the block. A handful of condominiums are also available. The median list price hovers around $330,000, ranging from the low-$200,000s to the low-$500,000s. Afternoons at Indian Meadows Park
The Capital Region offers all four seasons, with hot and humid summers. According to the Town of Glenville's website, cold winters bring an average annual snowfall of around 65 inches. East Glenville is home to several green spaces. Indian Meadows Park's 186 acres include several ball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts and brand-new pickleball courts. Two small ponds are open seasonally for ice skating and ice hockey when the water freezes over. The Greenway Trail connects to Andersen Dog Park, about 2 miles south, while other wooded trails attract cross-country skiers and snowshoers in the winter. Farther east, Indian Kill Nature Preserve offers wooded hiking trails dotted with spring wildflowers.
Outside the hamlet, the Village of Scotia is home to Collins Park. "It's where all the Little Leagues play," Mayette says. Amenities include sports courts, a splash pad, the Scotia Library and a large pond that attracts anglers and boaters. Across the street, Freedom Park features an outdoor amphitheater along the riverbank, while a paved pathway leads to several boat docks.
Tucked in the heart of the Capital Region, East Glenville residents are surrounded by the great outdoors. Scenic mountain ranges border the region, including the Adirondacks to the north and the Catskills to the south. Sweeping landscapes and rugged terrain put residents within 45 miles of multiple nature preserves, golf courses, lakes and ski resorts.

Shopping and dining on Route 50
East Glenville's commercial corridor, Stoodley Corners, spans both sides of New York State Route 50. "We have our own town center with two major grocery stores, Target, and several other shops and restaurants," Mayette says. Additional big-box stores and indoor shopping malls are 8 miles south on Schenectady's outskirts or 8 miles east in Clifton Park.
Regarding dining, "You don't have to leave Glenville for a night out. We have everything: fast-food chains, casual eateries, pubs and fine dining," Mayette says, noting Max410 at The Waters Edge as a personal favorite. Several small businesses line Scotia's small main strip, while Schenectady's growing food scene is across the river. "Druthers Brewing Company and Shaker & Vine are wildly popular," Mayette says. Schenectady is the go-to place for entertainment, with establishments like the River Casino & Resort and Proctors Theatre. Residents are also a short drive from Saratoga Springs and Albany for even more events and entertainment.

Have you ever seen a skibird fly past your window? In East Glenville, you'll catch sightings of majestic skibirds regularly, but you won't see a feather or beak on this exotic species. A spectacular food scene, diverse recreation and highly-rated schools enhance the residential quality of life. <br> <br>"Massive planes will fly over your house, but it's not a deterrent. It's actually cool," says Brian Brosen, licensed associate broker and leader of The Capital Team. He's been selling real estate in the Capital Region for nearly 20 years and says, "I've shown houses where, on the other side of the fence, you can see and feel and hear planes warming up on the runway. But you tune it out. You don't even pay attention to it after a while." And there's a flip side, he says. "Many people feel safe knowing the military is next door." The homes in East Glenville range from contemporary homes with sleek lines to traditional colonials. Ranches are a typical style and include smaller builds and roomier split levels.
