Less than 10 miles from Minneapolis in the first-ring suburb of Edina, the neighborhood of Melody Lake feels far away from the city. Forested gravel paths lead neighbors to scenic waterfront vistas in this northwestern quadrant of Edina. Named after its centralized body of water, Melody Lake is desirable for its A-rated school district, waterfront properties and proximity to State Highway 100. “Melody Lake is very quiet, and people love that there are a couple of parks within walking distance,” says Regina Finkelstein, Realtor at RE/MAX Results. “Plus, it’s close to the schools, and Edina is well-known for its district.” Melody Lake residents are also close to popular commercial hub, 50th Street and France Avenue, and eateries like The Hilltop, which has been family-owned since 1977. For those who commute, State Highway 100 makes getting to and from Minneapolis, a 12-mile drive, accessible within about 15 minutes. With a scenic lakeside park and lawns dotted with mature oak trees, Melody Lake gives residents a sense of seclusion while remaining central to all that Edina has to offer.
Ranch styles and New Traditionals
The real estate market in Melody Lake is competitive due to the limited housing inventory. With a median sales price of $510,000, homes in Melody Lake are priced $200,000 more than the average property in the Minneapolis Metro Area. Most of the homes in Melody Lake were constructed in the 1950s, and boast styles common to the era, like traditional ramblers and split-levels. “There’s a lot of ‘40s and ‘50s homes, but we’re seeing more tear-down rebuilds throughout the community and all of Edina,” says Troy Martenson, Realtor at eXp Realty with over 25 years of experience in selling in the area. As rebuilds develop in the community, New Traditional styles have also become increasingly common. Homes range from the high $200,000s for a three-bedroom split-level to upwards of $1.5 million for a five-bedroom New Traditional with waterfront views of the community's namesake lake. Direct waterfront properties here will inevitably have the highest price points. Wide streets lead to cul-de-sacs, where homes are neatly decorated with flower baskets in the windows and basketball hoops sit at the end of driveways. Homes here also often feature mid-sized lawns, paved driveways and multi-car garages.
High-marks at Edina Public Schools
Families in Melody Lake are zoned for the Edina Public School District, ranked No. 4 as the best school district in Minnesota by the educational review site, Niche. Students may attend schools like Countryside Elementary, Valley View Middle and Edina High School, which have earned ratings of A, A-plus and A-plus from Niche. Countryside Elementary School promotes leadership from an early age with the option to participate as student representatives in the kids' council. Valley View Middle School serves around 1,000 students and boasts a student-teacher ratio of 15:1. Edina High School offers 26 AP courses to earn college credit and an acclaimed sports department that’s brought home 200 state championship titles. Private options like Our Lady of Grace Catholic School are also available.
Lakefront views at Melody Lake Park
Melody Lake Park runs along the northeast edge of the neighborhood and provides waterfront vistas of its namesake lake. A recent effort restored the lake’s shoreline with a plant buffer displaying vibrant pops of color from native asters and black-eyed Susans. A few private docks line the shores for pedal boating, kayaking and non-motorized boating during the summertime. While in the spring, baseball and soccer teams practice at Yancey Park, which also features tennis courts and a playground on the neighborhood's western side. Golfers head to the private Edina Country Club in nearby Golf Terrace for a day spent on the fairways. The country club offers a championship 18-hole course and driving range for members only.
Local boutiques and eateries at 50th & France
Residents are 2 miles from downtown Edina and the intersection of 50th Street and France Avenue, the primary commercial district in the area. Local boutiques like Harriet and Alice - for knitting supplies - and Annika Bridal Boutique - for the perfect dress - are mainstays within the community. Groceries and everyday essentials are available at Jerry's Foods, Lunds & Byerlys and the nearby Walgreens Pharmacy. When dining in the area, locals head to The Hilltop for American classics, a family-friendly environment and a place to catch the big game on their TVs. Their patio is suitable for all four-seasons, closed-in and heated during winter, so patrons can still enjoy the views. For a quick bite, neighbors can grab a slice, sandwich or salad from the Minnesota-based Davanni’s Pizza and Hot Hoagies, which has been serving the community since 1975. While the Starling, offers a wide selection of craft cocktails and small plates from a variety of global cuisines.
