Suburban streets border parks and boutique shopping
When the weather dips below freezing, the sound of hockey sticks and slap shots can be heard coming from the ice rink at Weber Park. After practice, teams unlace their skates in the nearby warming house, and families head to Bogart's Doughnut Co. in St. Louis Park or stop for a slice from Hello Pizza. Morningside, an Edina neighborhood where the homes date back to the 1930s and '40s is situated between shopping centers. There are strip malls to the north along Excelsior Boulevard, brick-sided boutiques in the 50th & France district to the South and cozy coffee shops closer to Lake Harriet. "Edina has suburban and urban sections, and Morningside is a premium neighborhood for the urban area," says Deb Lindor of MJL Homes, a local homebuilder who has built houses in Morningside. "It checks all the boxes for homeowners. It's safe, it's got great schools, and it's walkable to restaurants and parks." Downtown Minneapolis is 8 miles away — about a 20-minute commute in the morning — and Saint Paul is roughly 17 miles west along Interstate 94. In Morningside, suburban comfort blends with small-town charm on the outskirts of the Twin Cities.

Historic homes and newly built traditional styles
According to Lindor, "Morningside is a neighborhood in transition. Most of the houses were built in the 1960s and before, so now that a lot of the original owners are retiring and selling, these houses are finally getting updated or completely rebuilt." Three-bedroom Tudor styles, quaint cottages and farmhouses constructed prior to World War II can sell for between $420,000 and $875,000, with higher prices accounting for recent renovations. Buyers will find open floor plans, polished hardwood and new kitchen appliances in remodeled homes. While some older homes feature steep-pitched roofs reminiscent of something out of Grimm's Fairy Tales — with the addition of driveway basketball hoops and two-car garages, that is. Larger, five-bedroom houses can start at $1.4 million and sometimes even surpass $2 million in Morningside, and newer builds in the traditional style — some of which span over 4,500 square feet — are on the rise. Lot sizes average around ¼ acre, and raised lawns are covered in orange and red leaves in the fall. Within Edina, in general, "A lot of money has been spent keeping that real estate supply very current and desirable," says Debbie McNally, who has spent the past two decades developing an expertise in Minnesota real estate.

A top-performing robotics team at Edina High School and 25 AP classes
Younger families are attracted to the neighborhood's highly-rated schools, and students can attend prekindergarten at Golden Years Montessori School. Concord Elementary, which receives an A grade from the educational review site, Niche, is the next stop for kindergarten through Grade 5. Depending on their home address, others are districted for Highlands Elementary, which also receives an A. South View Middle and Edina High earned an A and an A-plus, respectively, and the EHS varsity robotics team is one of the highest-ranked in Minnesota. Students can join activities like Model UN or the Latin Club, and there are 25 AP classes to choose from: like Studio Art, Computer Science and European Geography. The majority of students have taken at least one AP course and over 80% enroll in four-year colleges after receiving their high school diplomas.

Ice rinks, picnic shelters and nearby country clubs
Weber Park is within walking distance for many Morningside families who head to the playground, tennis courts or skating rink, weather permitting. Picnic shelters border a basketball court and playground at Minikahda Vista Park nearby, and Browndale Park also has an ice rink; Edina's hockey program was established in the early 1950s, and skating has remained central to life in the city for the better part of a century. Golfers can head to the Edina Country Club, which has a fitness center, dining options, an outdoor pool and an 18-hole course designed by Tom Bendelow.

Boating, polar plunges and ice fishing on the lakes
To the west of Morningside lies Lake Harriet, bordered by wooden fishing piers, canoe racks and tennis courts at Beard's Plaisance Park. There are rugged walking trails in Thomas Sadler Roberts Bird Sanctuary, and brave polar dippers head to the Harriet "Magic Hole" when the water freezes over. Lyndale Park Rose Garden is ideal for photo ops in the spring and summer. Farther north is Minneapolis' largest lake Bde Maka Ska and Thomas Beach which provide visitors with captivating views of the city's skyline. The lake also serves as the home base for the Minneapolis Sailing Center, which offers group lessons, one-on-one instruction and membership opportunities. When temperatures drop below freezing, fishermen cut holes in the ice and cast their lines for northern pike.

Historic trolley rides and lessons in herbal medicine
Lake Harriet Bandshell is a popular event venue throughout the summer months, and locals sit on benches and roll out blankets to watch chamber orchestras, swing bands and Grateful Dead tributes perform beside the water. Next door, Bread and Pickle serves lobster rolls and coleslaw to concertgoers. Visitors to the Minnesota Streetcar Museum can ride historic trolleys along the Como-Harriet Streetcar Line. In the summer, kids enroll in Streetcar Camp and locals can book tickets for Streetcar Murder Mystery performances and "Graveyard Ghost Stories" around Halloween. In the Bakken Museum farther north, visitors can learn about everything from static electricity to the medical benefits of plants in the Florence Bakken Gardens. There's also a regular calendar of events in the 50th & France Commerical District, including "Llamas on the Plaza" in the fall, a tree lighting ceremony after Thanksgiving and the Edina Art Fair at the beginning of the summer season.

Linden Hills, Excelsior Boulevard and 50th & France retail
After a hot day out on the lakes, beachgoers can head to Sebastian Joe's Ice Cream Shop in Linden Hills for hand-made small-batch flavors. Martina serves upscale Argentine dishes nearby, and there's plenty of outdoor seating at Rosalia. Upton Avenue is lined with small businesses like Heartfelt, which sells crafting supplies, and Wild Rumpus Books for Young Readers hosts signings and story-times on 43rd Street. Kids can also visit the bookstore’s live-in cats, parakeet and chinchilla. Starting in early May, over 50 vendors sell locally-grown produce at the Linden Hills Farmers Market. Year-round, residents can pick up groceries at Fresh Thyme Market or Trader Joe's, or head to Sunnyside Avenue to stop by Wedge Linden Hills. There's also 50th & France street shopping, which, according to McNally, is "Very, very popular. It's always busy and buzzing with new stores and with tried-and-true old stores. That's kind of the center point of the Edina neighborhoods." Go-to restaurants include Edina Grill, where brunch dishes include the French Toast Chicken Stack and AMA Sushi for poke bowls and sashimi. Finish off the night at the Edina Mann Theatre, which began showing movies in the 1930s and reopened in 2022.
